Workshop Note

The Helsinki Medal presented to Ford in 1975 represents his signing of the Helsinki Accords, a document that spelled out the commitment of 35 nations to security, economic and cultural cooperation. At the time, Ford insisted on signing this document. Many, however, found it controversial and voiced their opposition. Today, it is recognized for bringing attention to human rights violations in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, allowing dissidents to speak more freely, and helping end Soviet domination in Eastern Europe.
