Photographer's Note

Frank Rizzo (1920-91) was one of Philadelphia's more colorful and controversial political figures. He served as Mayor for two terms, 1972-80, and was Police Commissioner for four years prior to that. More information and commentary on his tenure can be found in Sao Paolantonio's "Rizzo: The Last Big Man in Big City America;" Andrea Mitchell's "Talking Back;" and Phyllis Kannis's "The Media and the Mayor's Race." Rizzo is still widely known and well-remembered in the Philadelphia region. The larger-than-life (10-ft. tall) bronze statue pictured here stands in front of Philadelphia's Municipal Services Building, across from City Hall. It has become one of the city's most recognizable landmarks.
