100 years ago

The Battle of Leuven began on August 4, 1914, when the Germans invaded Belgium. The twentieth Leuven was occupied. The occupation was peaceful expired. Or so it seemed. On August 25, the message went around that British and Belgian soldiers were on the move. Rockets fired - at one time were -. According to German soldiers Immediately afterwards there would be shot from some houses on the German troops, even from hotels where Germans were staying. The soldiers insisted that houses inside, shot down all who were they armed and set the houses on fire. The unrest lasted for several days, until the people had to leave, and was fired on 29 August. Town of Leuven Large areas around the station and in the centre were reduced to ashes. Only the town hall was protected. The hands of Professor Louis Scharp near the Great Beguines could continue senseless destruction safeguarded. The result of the arson: 1081 houses were completely destroyed and 209 civilians were killed, including twenty women, six clerics, eleven children (one to six months) and three octogenarians.

Leuven today.
Leuven is a city and municipality in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant. It's centrally located capital of this province and also the capital of the administrative and judicial district of Leuven. Leuven has an area of 5663 ha, has about 97,000 inhabitants (2013) and lies on the River Dyle.
Leuven is famous as the location of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, the oldest university in the Low Countries, the multinational Anheuser-Busch InBev (historic brewery Artois, afterwards also Interbrew and InBev called), the Farmers' Union and the University Hospital Gasthuisberg. Also several spin-offs of the KU Leuven, such as IMEC or Bio-Incubator, located in the city.
Because of the centuries-long presence of both the Artois brewery as student life Leuven is also called the beer capital of Flanders / Belgium called.
