Steam tractor with caravan, a photo from Gloucestershire, England

Photographer's Note

We had just left Stow-on -the-Wold heading for Wales when I spotted this steam wagon/caravan. I usually don't pull over on narrow roads to take photographs but I took a risk on this occasion. I ran back and fired off a number of shots but just couldn't seem to get one that I was happy with (at the time). This one was tightly cropped within camera because of my close proximity to the vehicle as it steamed past me.
I don't know if this should be described as a steam wagon. It was more like a tractor drawing a gypsy styled caravan. I am placing it at Stow-on-the-Wold but am uncertain about its exact location.

Very nice capture of this old steam tractor still in use.
Good pov and good layout.
The owner loves his vehicle as you can notice how the brass parts are on high polish. Interesting notes.

I like the way that the smoke makes such a good frame for the engine and particularly the driver who appears to be a bit of a character.
Lovely colours and fine clarity make it a most attractive shot.

This is a wonderful picture but a little bit too close, but on these way see we more details.
Every year see we here in my village this type steam wagons out of England.
Lovely composition, excellent captured.

You certainly couldn't miss this opportunity!
We used to have annual steam tractor rallies in our neighbourhood but, sadly, the guy who organised it has died and no-one seems to have taken up the cause!

I can imagine the frustration you felt, following this, trying to get the perfect angle. I would have liked it a little more angled, with the front part of the engine in frame but I can understand why it wasn't possible. As it is, you have some wonderfully sharp details, a scene full of smoky atmosphere and a driver who perfectly fits the part!
The fact that you have some buildings and trees in the b/g gives a better understanding of the context.

This is a beautiful part of the country. We passed through it in our campervan, last year, on our way to Avebury.

Hello Trevor - I love these old steam driven vehicles and to see one trundling along the road is a real treat. I too would have had to get a shot of this! I see it was taken near Stow-on-the-Wold. I was born very close to here ans Imagine that the engine may be on its way to Bloxam Steam Rally which takes place in June each year. The clouds of steam and smoke add brilliant atmosphere to the shot which you have cropped nice and tightly. UI love the glimpse of Cotswold Stone buildings and greenery in the BG, to me they remind me of home! TFS this, a shot that has put a smile on my face. Rosemary

From the TN I was hoping to see a nice old steam engine, but I am not disappointed to see this steam wagon, because this is very new to me, never heard of it before.
I like the details of the machine you have captured including the motion blur on the wheel. The driver is another attractive addition. The steam has created a good atmosphere for the photo. A good photo in all aspects, thanks for sharing.
