Photographer's Note

It is said that Caacupé is the Spiritual Capital of Paraguay, because of the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Caacupé, a Catholic Basilica inaugurated on December 8th of 1765, which has become a pilgrimage place to thousands of believers.

The name Caacupé comes from the guarani word "ka'a kupé", which means "behind the herb". The legend says that a guarani sculptor, converted into Christianity by the jesuitic missionaries, was coming back from the jungle with a very good piece of wood when he met some Indians of a very dangerous tribe, the Mbayas. He then promised to the Virgin that, if he could escape, he would sculpt an image of her and would venerate it. It was then that the Virgin herself appeared and shouted to him: "ka'aguý cupe-pe", which means "go behind the bushes of yerba mate", where he hid and could be saved.

In the workshop, a picture of the vitral where this legend is drawn.
