Photographer's Note
I was walking around the fence of Alvorada Palace when I saw some of its famous EMAS, there was a very bad guard with a gun near and I asked him permission to be closer of the fence and take a photo.
EMA (Rhea americana) is the most heavy bird in Americas, with 1,7 meter high and reaching 36 KG of weight. As you can see it is a far relative of the African ostrich. It is wild from South America living in open fields from the arid and cold Patagonia to the very hot and dry lands of North-eastern Brazil, the only predators of them while adults are pumas and jaguars.
When the garden of Alvorada Palace was created these big Brazilian birds were used to adorn them and became one of its symbols. During military government of president Costa e Silva his wife had two big dogs and the dogs hated these big birds. She then sent the emas to another palace in Brasília. Few weeks after she was inside a room of the palace when she saw a very venomous snake entering, she asked for help and one of the workers said her that snake was there because she had removed the EMAS from the gardens, in the next day the Emas were back to the gardens.
When Clinton visited Brazil in the 1990's, the CIA demanded the animals were closed and became far from the foreign president (I guess it is a lack of education to give orders inside the home of other people), but I guess the Americans guessed the EMAS were terrorists. Few months ago President Bolsonaro was talking with the press and decided to show a chloroquine box to an EMA (because he believed that was the solution for Covid-19) and the animal wanted to pick him and the press loved the image, showing as the animal was more smart than the president.

Hi Jorge,
I actually didn't know the name.
I checked in the wikipedia the Latin name which you mentioned and it says:
The greater rhea (Rhea americana) is a species of flightless bird native to eastern South America. Other names for the greater rhea include the grey, common, or American rhea; ema (Portuguese); or ñandú (Guaraní and Spanish).
So I realized I knew it as a nandu.
In fact I think I have seen them in the wild. When I traveled through Patagonia we have seen some of those running near the road. I didn't manage to take photos but it was amazing to see such giant wild birds in their natural habitat.
The white bus adds here an interesting background,
M

Hi Jorge,
The trees are framing well the bird. The point of view is showing the details of the Ema. The light is giving good colors rendering. Have a nice day.

Hello Jorge,
A good photo of this lonely bird in the large field. You captured it nicely underneath the red and green leaves of the trees and the light was nice and soft as well.

Hi Jorge
I wasn't familiar with the name Ema (good for a cousin of our emu). I've always know them by the Rhea name. A good photo of the bird and better still in the large view.
cheers

Hi Jorge
I was already aware of the Rhea name, but this is the first I have heard it referred to as an ema. Initially I thought it was a variation in spelling of the Australian emu. We also have cassowaries in the far north east. The red flowers add a welcome splash of colour. Tfs!

Hello Jorge, a very interesting note to accompany your shot.
I have heard of a Rhea before, they are so similar to the emu in appearance.
A good shot with the colourful tree making a nice frame.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello Jorfge, Nice view of this ostrich-like bird.
Interesing and amusing note about the birds and politicians. I saw the view of Bolsonaro giving a chloroquine box to ema. Our President is also an excellent theme for various memes.
Beautiful tree with the red flowers.
Best regards MAlgo

Hello Jorge,
If I hadn't read your note, I would have thought it's an ostrich. I like the colorful blooms above the fella.
