Georges Vancouver is considered to be the first to have mapped this coast of SouthWestern Australia close to Walpole. The Island seen in the rear is named after one of the boats of his expedition HMS Chatham (built 1788). This is of course not to be confused with the larger Chatham Islands East of New Zealand.

This picture was taken from Banksia Camp in d'Entrecasteaux National Park... a place you can only access by 4WD tracks... if you have a robust 4WD vehicle and some driving skills. A great experience!

Chatham's first significant voyage was Vancouver's five-year mission to the South Seas and Pacific Northwest coast of America. Her commander was Lieutenant William Robert Broughton, with 2nd Lieutenant James Hanson. In November 1791, while exploring the South Pacific, Broughton's crew were the first Europeans to sight the Chatham Islands, which they named after their ship.
