Photographer's Note
There was a large colony of fruit bats which roosted in Melbourne's Botanic gardens. So numerous were they that they were damaging non-native trees in the park and causing a bit of a smell. After a number of attempts to relocate them they finally moved to Yarra bend park, itself in an intercity area. There are many thousands of them there now. Here is one.

Hi Stephen: This is a very impressive photograph. The animal's head and face are in sharp focus and with the backgound thrown out of focus because of your f 3.5 it really makes the bat stand out. Well done.

The bat itself is perfect. Ive seen no other... The background on the other hand is a bit noisy.

A perfect shot. The bat is in perfect focus and in full flight. Excellent timing. Nice sharpness.
The image would be even better if you cropped the top a bit and then, to balance, a bit from the right also.

great shot stephen...just to put my two bobs worth in re the workshop...I think its much better left as it is. I think the compsoition that has the bat bottom left and leaves a broad open green area above and in front of it is perfect. A thick black border detracts from it IMHO. T
hanks for sharing, van

Hello Stephen,
une photo qui m'impressionne par sa qualité technique au niveau de l'arrêt sur image. Net et sans bavures, un focus précis sur la cible malgré une DOF faible.
J'apprécie ce genre de document.
Greetings.
Daniel.

This capture of a bat in full flight is great. The DOF works very well and the bat remained well, quite sharp!! I like the appearance of the wings, shiny..and it's hair..funny :) Nice colour! I think the Sigma 70-200 did a quite good job. I wanted that lens before too..but now that Pentax has announced a 60-250 F2.8, which is also weathersealed and has SSM (SuperSonic Motor), well, I'm going to put money aside for that one. Will be an expensive one, hehe!
Greetings,
Emiel.
