Photographer's Note

Here's another fine mess we got ourselves into...

HARLEM, GEORGIA is the birthplace of Oliver Hardy, the portly half of the world-famous duo. On our off-beat tour of the American South that's one stop we did not want to miss.

There is a small museum dedicated to Laurel & Hardy with artifacts and memorabilia, donated by fans from around the world, and a theatre room in the back where you can watch any of the 106 movies they made together.

It is run by a crew of local enthusiasts. One of them invited us to his private museum (also in Harlem) with replica's of cars from L&H movies made in wood, sometimes in bamboo too. Now, that was a real treat!

Ulverston in the north of England, where Stan was born, is probably still the walhalla for Laurel and Hardy fans, but Harlem, Georgia was a real pleasure. Big fun!

THIS picture shows the image of Ollie on the town's water tower. A wider view of the location in the center of town is located in the workshop.

One of my favourite Big Star songs, happens to be the title of a Laurel and Hardy movie too. Surely they have nothing to do with each other, but nevermind...Big Star's a band from the south too.

song title reference: Big Star
