Photographer's Note

Charleston is the oldest and largest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The city was founded in 1670 as Charles Town, honoring King Charles II of England. Its initial location at Albemarle Point on the west bank of the Ashley River (now Charles Towne Landing) was abandoned in 1680 for its present site. The booming port made Charleston the fifth-largest city in North America within ten years.

The town is worth visiting especially for its many historical houses and sites. Plenty of churches too. This one is St. Michael's Episcopal Church. It was built between 1751 and 1761 at the corner of Broad and Meeting streets. It is the oldest surviving religious building in Charleston.
