Welcoming in the new year of 2018, I wanted to find a winter scene to fit the season and a symbolic scene looking forward. Lets all take new Roads in the new year, experience life, take on new adventures and create lasting memories.

Here we have one of my personal favourite photos, its from Zion Canyon in Utah. This Canyon Park was breath taking in the winter, and hardly anyone else was there at this time. I've heard in the summer and spring it's very busy with cars and people, so much so that even taking a photo on the road as I did here would be pretty much impossible.

It reminded me alot of driving through Iceland, hardly any cars or people, its a very isolated National Park in the winter months. I highly recommend visiting here.

The scene caught my attention because of the woman taking a photo, so I thought why not do the same with her in it. Too bad she wasn't wearing Red, but I don't exactly have control over that :)

Hello Craig,
On journeys like this you should always bring a red coat along with the tripod and your other equipment, so you could ask anyone you want to include in a photo to put it on. It will make so many pictures even better.
On second thought a bright red coat might have ruined the delicate balance of mild colours in this photo. The soft tones of brown, green, grey and yellow are perfect as they are. The rocky scenery looks almost too good to be true, like something built in Hollywood for a Technicolor film of the 1950's. Quite amazing. The fog is really important too.

The woman in her pastel coloured jacket actually suits the colour scheme of the shot perfectly!
The mountains look almost too good to be true.

Hi Craig,

The road leads my eye toward the mountain which is creating depth. The presence of the person has an effect of scale. The point of view is showing the details of the mountains. The reflection of the light on the snow is bringing out the colors. Happy New Year.

Even in harsh conditions and cold weather, this park looks amazing and intriguinmg, photography-wise. Collected good DOF and managed a fine contrast from the rocks to the snow-covered slopes and trees.

Great seasonal shot. The yellow line leads the way, the scenery is breathtaking. The man taking a moment to take admire the view and mayby take a picture...he just wraps ups the shot for me.

Hi Craig,
I like these short moments when snow layer is thin and only adds highlights to landscape. That is a fantastic place where mountain road is between steep cliffs. Surely worth a photostop.

Happy New Year! This scenery is gorgeous. The light snow and the mist add to the beauty, and I like that one tree that someone has no snow on it at all. The woman is a bonus, but the scenery would be captivating enough on its own. I also like how the road leads us away and into the distance.

Hello Craig,

I have just enjoyed perusing this photograph and making sure that I visited each segment of it.
It really is a cracker of a shot!
It contains all the things that are advocated in a good composition and, added to that, it is in a most stunning location.
The low swirling clouds give it an 'out of this world' atmosphere.
I wouldn't have been surprised if you had said it was from a location where 'The Lord of the Rings' was filmed!

Hi Craig,
wow this is an amazing view from Zion! I had the pleasure to be there but I didn't see it in the winter decoration. Snow makes it feel Alpine like although normally it appears as a desert like landscape.
Brilliant composition with the motif of the road so suitable for the new year picture. The girl adds a nice aspect to it. I think the red color is overrated as long at the silhouette is eye catching the color is secondary... and you are so lucky to attractive ladies in your frame.

I remember one time you've visited the national parks of the US in winter. You had a lot of courage.
But the picture is absolutely beautiful. The redbrown rock colour goes well with the snowy slopes and it's gorgeous how the rocks appear out of the fog.

I visite this NP in september and I found many people there. here you got a precious view with the snow breaking the intense reds and golden of the rocks and creating a marvelous different aspect. excellent use of elements and personage. very beautiful. I ever asked why the asphalt there was red...
