Photographer's Note

This was taken in the famous Pike's Place Market in Seattle. But rather than write a note about crabs I will include a note about the Super Bowl - in honor of Seattle's first trip to the Super Bowl, which is Sunday, February 4th.
The Super Bowl is the NFL (National Football League) championship game between the best teams from the AFC (American Football Conference) and the NFC (National Football Conference). It is not always the best game of the year, but it is certainly the most hyped and the most watched. This is sometimes unfortunate because people from other countries who are not familiar with American football may only see this one game of the year, and it is rarely a good one. Usually the earlier playoff games are much better, but in recent years the Super Bowls have been good, close contests.
American Football is by far the most popular sport in America and don't believe anyone who tells you otherwise. The Super Bowl has become much more than just a game, it is a huge event. There are pre-game festivities and an expensive half-time show. This year the Rolling Stones will perform at halftime. Most Americans will be watching the game at a Super Bowl party. People gather together and have pizza, beer, chips and dips, and other snacks, and watch the game.
Because so many people watch, it has become a huge opportunity for TV advertisers. They will spend millions of dollars on a 30-second commercial because there is such a huge audience. So, even watching the commercials has become an event, because everyone wants to see these so-called great commercials. If you ask me, few are actually creative or memorable. But once in a while you will see a good one. An interesting note, Coca-Cola does not advertise during the Super Bowl. They seem to own just about every other event, but during the Super Bowl you will only see Pepsi ads.
This year is Super Bowl XL ("40") and it is the Seattle Seahawks vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers have a long history and have been to 5 Super Bowls, winning 4 of them (in the 1970's), and this is Seattle's first time. The game is always played at a neutral site - this year it is in Detroit, Michigan. Will you be watching?
