How to wear a mask..., a photo from New York, Northeast

Photographer's Note

This is technically not the best photo, but I was fascinated by the masked woman sitting in front of the poster detailing how to wear a mask. I tried to be discreet, and not make it too obvious that I was taking her photo, so it was a very quick grab.

It's mandatory to wear a mask on all subways and buses in NYC, and most people have complied, but recently the city implemented a $50 fine for those few who still won't follow the rules.

This woman not only had a mask, and the colorful gloves that you can see one of here, but inside her large bag she also had packages of cleaning wipes. I watched as she checked inside the bag to make sure they were in there. She was definitely prepared. :-)

Hi Brenda,the lady is really perfectly in order, and the message is very useful. I have seen masks in every position, the most fashionable is the one tied to the arm, but on public transport, here everyone respects the rules. Perhaps this is the secret of the good time that Italy is experiencing compared to other nations, after the March massacres. Hello Brenda,
You had previously shown pictures taken in the NYC subway. Hereby a contemporary addition.
The lady's clothes and her bag match nicely while the mouth mask and gloves in their blue colour also match each other.
It's amazing how many people wear their masks in a wrong, malfunctioning way, even on TV people who are interviewed in front of the camera.
This lady knows how to do it.

You made the most of a fortuitous alignment of the lady and the sign. The photo captures something of the spirit of the times. She is certainly a good advertisement for the message in the sign.

A good photo of the times. It is a pity, however, that she isn't wearing a good fitting mask - just look at the gaping bulge on the side just waiting to let COVID through. I see lots of people wearing poorly fitting masks.

Hello Brenda,
A coincidence like this is what every "street photographer" is always looking for. Or could she have decided to sit exactly there because she knew it would look funny? In any case it was a photo opportunity you just couldn't miss. It's well exposed and very nicely cropped. Others have mentioned matching colors, but the best match is that between her hair and the sign!

Excellent daily life observation from the subway with the woman in front of the sign. Looks like she is wearing her mask correctly. I like the colour contrast between the yellow sign and the blue of the bench and the woman's mask and gloves.

Hello Brenda, The woman is really well prepared for the COVID-19. She wears her mask properly, she wears also the gloves. Maybe the sunglasses are worn as the protection too. i iamgine that you had to be quick, the result is superb. Fazntastic reportage picture from the coronavirus times.

I have a thing about wearing gloves...i get why people think its the right thing to do but its not. The best thing is to NOT wear gloves, and just wash your hands frequently. Here is why....germs get on the gloves, and people just continue wearing them, not washing the gloves (why would they), and germs spread that way. Gloves are really only suppose to be worm for "procedures" then thrown away. They're not to be worn for hours and hours all day long, while you touch hundreds of items, spreading germs. Trust me, please do not wear gloves, just wash your hands. that's my health care tip of the day :) Love the photo and that you did so discreetly :) cheers

I think they finally placed these billboards on the White House, but it's too late.
In the Netherlands, too, the government has long hesitated to prescribe mouth masks, and at last they have now been given the urgent advice to wear them in public areas. However, there are still government advisers who deny that this (though it is little) can contribute to the fight against the virus.
Nice observation with this picture of a well protected lady.

Signum temporis! You definitely captured the spirit of our times! At least our times this awkward year. The poster on its own, or the woman on her own, would have made for interesting photos but having both in one shot it's just perfect. I also like the matching (blue glove and mask) and contrasting colours (blue and yellow).

Hello Brenda, love this potrait of the "common scene" nowadays. I like the yellow post of how to use a mask, I think they could use this here in Brazil. I saw a lot many people not using the mask correctely. This train style remember me the new models used in Rio de Janeiro city.

what a nice reportage showing the sign of present times. I regret I don't live in a city, because in a countryside or suburbs there are less opportunities for photos like this.
Nice that you have captured both the instruction and the real life example.
I am actually shocked by the fact that wearing masks meets such a huge resistance. I have seen in the US some discussions about limiting the freedom, in Poland people as well object referring to constitution, on FB I see even some scientists demonstrating that it is not working.
Even though I agree that too many of the restrictions are ridiculous, I think wearing masks is actually a good one since it does not require any effort, does not impact on economy and may make some measurable difference. As a scientist I need to undergo some tests for mask fitting etc, so I realize of course that most of the masks are not working in 100% but as one of the British supermarket says in its advert "every little helps".

Dear Brenda,

I haven'tr really noticed any shortcoming on the technical side. On the other hand, its an excellent capture, showing a modern day phenomenon. Luckily, this woman seems to wear the mask properly, and she is eligible for one plus point for the disposable gloves.
