Photographer's Note
Didn't travel far for this pic - caught it right through my glass door on my deck last month. I had sprinkled birdseed earlier, but our last heavy snow covered it up quickly.
I then spotted this little fellow tunneling through the snow, and popping up at intervals for air. With the shutter lag inherent in digicams (gotta fix that!) I got many shots of him diving back down, but was rewarded with this shot. I love it!

Great shot. I did not know that grey squirrels tunneled under the snow!! but they are very smart animals.
Well, I guess They could asthey save acorns in the fall for hard times.
Great natural hstory picture, great short story.

Great wildlife shot...Seems everything did work perfect...Correct metering reveals all the details of the squirrel's fur and the snow...Lovely pose of the little cute creature!

Great emotive piece!
Looks a little over-exposed on my laptop TFT though.

Great shot! Good framing! However, some PS work would make it much better (contrast, sharpening, enhancing detail in the snow).

Excellent shot! My first thought was "Awwww, isn't (s)he cute". Nice exposure, shame about the slight colour noise on the fur - not sure whether it's ISO setting related, or Moire induced though..

So cute, so nice, so good.... Not so common to see a skirrel with a snow cap. It seems like he is posing for you. I love the brownish color in this almost B & W color, and his cute mustaches and paws held together. Great shot.

Photo magnifique. Il faut vivre au Canada pour connaître les difficultés d'une telle image. D'abord il faut être là au bon moment, ensuite les contrastes ne sont pas faciles à contrôler. Excellente composition, j'aime beaucoup. Bravo!
Magnificent photo. It is necessary to live in Canada to know the difficulties of such an image. At first it is necessary to be there at the right time, then the contrasts are not easy to control. Excellent composition, I like very much. Bravo!

That is so cute. You're so lucky to have captured this shot. I have shutter lag on my camera too and it is a pain. This picture is really great, good timing.

Just found this via some bodies favourites, the little felow is a real caricter , he is clean and sharp but the snow could be tonned down with burntool set low say 15% and soft edged brush brush across the bright areas should lift a little detail back.
overal a good shot, has enough humor in it to be a post card in Nat park torist office, definately cute ;0)))))#

Great shot - I like it.
I seams like the poor fellow, simply have cold paws (not to mention his head) and his trying to warm up a bit.

A cute subject is nice but originality is what makes this well composed photo a great shot. Great capture, Carol.
To compensate for shutter lag, I often shoot in burst mode, which takes several shots one right after the other. It is a poor remedy because after the burst, you have to wait for the camera to process the 3 to 5 images it has taken. That takes ages, and more often than not, by then, your subject has disappeared.

Fantastic shot, Carol! You caught the squirrel in a very funny pose, he must be freezing..
Nice crop, I like the soft grey of the snow how it suits with the fur.
Congrats.

Superb shot Carol;
If this was one of my shots. This would be my Christmas card I'd be sending out!
Even more respect for you getting this shot, now that I've read about your shutter lag problems.
Well done!

Great shot - I recently did one not as good as this, and was directed to yours. Also your note was interesting - the squirrel I had photographed had also burrowed through the snow, a behavior I had never noticed before.

It's a beautiful shot. A bit funny, cause it looks like he's been hit by a snowball, and looking really amazed. It was worth waiting for.

Hi Carol,
This was one of the first pics I saw when I joined this site but, at the time, I wasn't confident enough to comment on it. Have just seen it again on the opening page, so I've come back to say how lovely I think it is! A complete opportunist shot, and what a reward! It really doesn't have to be technically brilliant to provide such a pleasing impact upon the viewer.
You have been very quiet here for a long time. Having read your Intro, and given your frequent travelling, I hope all is well with you and that you are alright.
All the best, Vicky

a very cute pic...very well cropped emphasizing the subject..
its always a little difficult to get a nice exposure and contrast, when zooming this much, on snow...
lucky shot...
