Photographer's Note

This shot was taken last February at the time of unprecedented rainfall all over Namibia. Few visitors have the privilege of seeing the Sossusvlei dune field with standing, let alone running water. As you can see in this shot, the ephemeral river had flowed. The day before the park was closed to visitors for fears of vehicles washing away in the river (which incidentally runs parallel to the road into the area) and once you pass into the "four wheel drive only" area the river and road are one and the same. We we lucky to be able to drive part of the way in and a long hike through the sand dunes and fording the river brought us into the heart of the area.
