It is doubtful that the heavy, stone yoke would have been used in practice. More likely the hip would have been protected by lighter equipment made from deerskin and stuffed with cotton. The axe was used for striking the ball. Both the stone yoke and votive axe are from the Yajalуn Region of the Sierra Norte de Chiapas - more particularly, 50 kilometres southwest of Palenque as the crow flies. They are displayed in the Regional Museum in Tuxtla Gutiйrrez. Dating is from the Late Classic 600 - 900 CE.
