Photographer's Note
The sculpture of a seated crocodile, to the left and of a serpent, to the right, were of creatures associated by the Maya with the creator god of the universe - Itzamnaaj. They serve as a metaphor for the land floating on the sea. The works date from the Pre-Classic era of 1000 - 400 BCE and come from the region of Izapa in Chiapas. They were photographed at the Regional Museum in Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
