Photographer's Note
The Temple of the Murals (Structure 1) at Bonampak rests at the west end of the Great Plaza. It consists of three rooms featuring the classic vault, with single doors to the north. The rooms are covered with murals created as frescoes that comprise a singular masterpiece of Maya art. This is the north wall of room #2, minus the overhead cartouches, recreated in the Regional Museum of Tuxtla Gutierrez.
"The strife is o'er (see the south wall of room #2), the battle done, now is the victor's victory won!"
The date of the battle: August 6, 792 CE, and now it is the time for judgement. The ruler of Bonampak, Chaan-Muan II, [governor under Yaxchilan] appears in the centre of the painting on the top step. He is accompanied by military leaders, other officials, and ladies of the court, not to mention numerous prisoners of war, some of whom have had their fingernails ripped out. The setting is a wide staircase. Chaan-Muan is dressed in a jaguar skin, with an elaborate headdress of quetzal feathers, and holding a spear. A captive, to the left, has been beheaded - the head lays on the third step down on a bed of leaves, the remainder of the body lower. Another dead prisoner lays at the king's feet. Still other prisoners hold out their hands, dripping in blood. Yet another prisoner directly in front of the ruler petitions for his life. [You should note the detail of a single, long eyelash on this captive.] On the third step to the far left, an executioner grasps the hair of a prisoner. On ground level, the forces of Bonampak watch.
Not much has changed over the centuries.
