Photographer's Note

Today, this lakescape in Toronto is frozen from the shoreline to beyond the breakwater, the formations of ice the result of one of the coldest winters in a quarter of a century.
Coincidentally, it was at this exact spot on Lake Ontario where a sixteen-year old girl completed the first ever swim across the lake in 1954. Marilyn Bell endured 5 metre waves, eels and deep fatigue to complete the crossing in just under 21 hours. She earned no money for her feat, outracing a famous American swimmer who had been offered $10 000 to make the swim. Today, she is remembered with a small plaque near the beach.
