Shadow on the Wall, a photo from Lancashire, England

Photographer's Note

Hello Everyone,

Sometimes, you see a scene, or a feature which is way beyond what you would normally look for. This was one such occasion!

It was a sunny day, the birds were feeding from our seed feeder and their shadows were playing on the stone wall.

At first, I photographed one bird and two shadows, which I will post as a workshop, but then I liked the single bird better. I wonder what you will think!

I agree with your choice for main post. It is a lovely shadow, slightly mis-shapen due to the shapes of the stones in the wall.

Hi Bev,

I like the play between the lighted and shadowed areas. The point of view is showing the details of the wall and of the shadows. The light is giving nice tints to the colors of the picture. Have a nice day.

Took an artistic approach upon this sight, well applied, beverley.
the bird's shadow is superbly visible, but only after i saw the WS original, comprehended what your choice was.

A really nice photo of just the shadows without any parts of the real things. The old stone wall is a great background as well and that bird looks really cute like this as well.

Hi Bev,a really nice idea, usually this kind of photo is used with street lamps, whose shadow is always very characteristic. Great choice of subject, waiting for the presence of the birds to capture their shadow too, very beautiful and rich also the WS where everything is explained better. Hello Bev,
If I ever thought I could influence your style of photography I would be very proud, because I know you as one of the masters of composition and smart cropping on this site. Because of computer problems I can only see this on my cellphone, which is a huge disadvantage, but it’s still enough to realize what an elegant and entertaining photo this is. No doubt it’s the cropped version that rightly deserves to be the main upload and the reason why I will add this to my favourites.

I know you like a lot the effect of the shadows and the effect of them. the main post is very minimalist and curious, but I liked more the WS with the bird in evidence.

Hi Bev,
Great idea indeed! The shadow is so simple and yet tells us the story. I am glad you included also the bigger picture as an explanation but the simplier is much better.
I have a feeling looking at it that the shadow is sharoer than the wall itself. Is it possible?

I like the minimalism of this photo. What makes it artful is the shadow's allusion to what is happening outside of the frame.
