Photographer's Note
A change from pictures of buildings now and 'Back to nature'.
Walking through a field we spotted this dead tree that had fallen, and on closer inspection we saw how new life was taking over using the dead wood for food and support.
I think that this is the bracket fungus "Turkeytail" but please correct me if you know differently.
This bracket fungus forms semi-circular caps around tree trunks. The caps are thin and tough, with very clear velvety concentric rings of colour.
It grows on deadwood, mainly hardwood such as beech or oak; it is very common!
Look carefully, there is a slug.
Thanks for looking.

Hi Jean
The fungus makes a great pattern against the dark bark The green of the grass provided a great foil.

Hello Jean,
An interesting and unusual photo showing some of the strange things happening in nature. It's a bit of art with the nice contrasts of grey, white and green. And the slug adds some daily life.
Best regards,
Gert

Hi Jean,
Very well spotted. I suppose this is a part of the circle of life. Dead tree is taken back by the nature. The funghi which not always look pretty are helping to recycle the material, while they may be eaten by some animals later.
Looking forward to your nature series,
M

Hello Jean,
Does this fungus only grow on dead wood?
I've seen it recently grow on tree trunks that are still standing...but they may have been dead trunks already because there were a lot of holes in it.
Some small mosses also grow on the bark of the tree.
Excellent close view.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Jean
Amazing repetition of the bracket fungi. Interesting to see both sets horizontal despite the pronounced lean of the bg log. Tfs!

Hello Jean,
Nature has such beauty where you might least expect it!
The shapes and patterns are surprising.
Have you noticed how the fungus is similar in hues to those of the rotting tree?
Your photograph is so sharp that you could have done a workshop just focussing in on the fungus, as a w/s, without a problem.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Jean.
An interesting composition of still lifes, true that this dead trunk gives life to other species, we can see fungi and moss, an image of interesting textures, and nice color in some tones very attractive, the intense green of the grass highlights the old wood.
Well done. I like it.
All the best and have a good start of the week.
Luis.
