Photographer's Note

This one's for John (Tyro), as I mentioned the unusual viewpoint he'd managed on a recent posting. Well this must be fairly unusual too: it's not often that Tower Bridge opens these days, let alone for a yacht!

It was taken in 1984 I believe, when I was helping a friend bring his boat round from the Solent to the Thames. By chance another of the crew knew someone who worked on the bridge, 'phoned him up (not on a mobile!) and persuaded him to authorize the opening for us to sail through. This was taken from the yacht as we were approaching the Bridge to enter the Pool. On the way back, I left the boat briefly to go to the bridge to get a shot of the yacht going through from above (see Workshop 1) and then rejoined in St Katherine's Dock. Workshop 2 is us getting ready to go through (to prove it was a yacht!)

Old b/w neg, as ever scanned on a Nikon film scanner @ 4000 dpi. Quality not great, but maybe the rarity value makes up for technical inadequacies.
