Photographer's Note
Was working around Ipswich docks the other night, the condition were great, super reflections, so in between lessons I captured this scene, hand held, as I still have not purchased a tripod, hope you like it as much as I do, Cheers Iain.

Hello Iain, whilst a tripod may have been useful you have still captured this shot pretty well, the exposure is very good and the reflections most impressive.
Cheers Les.

Hi Iain
You have to get out there and buy a tripod!! :)
then we can see the night time shots improved even more so. But like you said, for being handheld, its pretty darn good.
the water looks so black, its vert attractive.
so are the water reflections, the mirror image is always cool.
nice shot hand held.
cheers

Hi Iain - Time to invest in that tripod. The composition is very appealing and I love the golden colours against the deep black of sky and water. The tripod would have made the difference on sharpness though as you could have stopped down. I reckon it is quite difficult to hand hold for a second but you have done a good job under not ideal circumstances. Take care and regards to Dawn. Rosemary

Le potentiel photographique nocturne de l'endroit est très important. Dommage que tu perdes un peu de définition de l'image avec cette sensibilité en ISO un peu forte. A 100 ISO et avec un trépied, le résultat serait encore meilleur.

Hello Iain,
A one second exposure and handheld? How do you do it? You certainly have nerves of steel if you are a driving instructor - you must have a rock-steady hand too! That's amazing. Actually, I guess you must have rested against a railing or something like that? Even so, it's not the same as a good steady tripod.
But I have to agree with Craig (macjake) - a tripod is a must for you for these long-exposure night shots. Christmas is just around the corner so Santa might be good to you! Write him a nice letter and remember to leave out a glass of sherry and a mince pie.
But, to your picture. As I say, this is amazing for handheld, but it is also well composed, perfectly exposed and has fine colours. The reflections on the water are lovely and almost mirror-like. I presume there wasn't the slightest breath of wind at this time.
Beautiful!
Kind Regards,
John.

Perfect night scene mirror on port water's, Iain.
Good clear details on illuminated edifices and boats, no excessive glare.
Cong.'s for a fine shot.

Hi Iain
I've read the conversation between yourself and John about steady hands. Wow, I could never hold a camera for a second and get that result, no matter how many elbows I tucked in. Betcha can't wait for Christmas though. I hope you've been a good boy this year. Great colours, exposition and sharpness considering the conditions. A tripod, f/11 and a cable release and you'd be absolutely dangerous! :)
Cheers
Lisa
