Photographer's Note

When I saw this it reminded me of the words, sung to the tune of Humoresque:

While the train is in the station,
Please refrain from urination,
Have regard for railway property.
If you want to pass some water,
Go and ask the railway-porter.
He will show you the lavatory.

There is a bit of history attached to this photo of course. The railway track from Gobowen, via Oswestry, to Llanymynech was lost by the 1960s. Recently a Cambrian Heritage Railways project has been formed, which is run by volunteers, and since 2009, 8 miles of track are now in their possession. Hopefully the track will be restored; but there is so much work to be done, and not enough folks visit the site unfortunately. A European grant funding was matched by very large amounts of volunteer labour, benefits in kind, and private donations. The first passengers on the acquired track were carried in July 2005, using class 101 diesel multiple units dating from the 1960s. The ability to develop further has been constrained by the limited funding from operational income and private donations, and it has become increasingly apparent that this small-scale stand-alone operation will not be viable in the long term.

It will be such a pity if the project is halted because of a lack of funding; we had such a great time riding down this track on the Saturday of Easter, we were the only family that morning, and the volunteer staff were wonderful!
