Photographer's Note
I've always thought you need clouds to make a really pretty sunset. This was the best sunset we had during our stay and we had three decent ones altogether. We had rented a cottage just above the harbour at Elgol on Loch Scavaig Read about it here on my earlier post.
This shot was taken on the previous night to the one linked above. To get the low POV I was sitting on the rocks. Exposure was balanced by the ND grad.

Hi Kath,
You've got a triple jackpot from this location. Light where the setting sun illuminates clouds from underside is fascinating. Yes perfectly clear sky doesn't usually make a special sunset, at least on northern latitudes.
I wonder if ND grad was needed, now the fg stones look relatively bright.

You are right, clouds do make a sunset. I like this beautiful dramatic scene made more interesting by the beautifully coloured sky - stunning photo, well done.

Hello Kath,
You most certainly do! I like the low point of view including the foreground rocks to create a good sense of depth and provide a foil to that gorgeous sky. Superb colours and sharpness. Thanks for sharing this lovely image.

Hello Kath
Pretty much the same POV as your last picture...but so very different. This is excellent & clarity, especially on the stones is top notch.
You mentioned that to get the low POV, you were sitting on the rocks...but what about the tripod?.. kept low to your sitting height I would presume.
But its this low POV which makes this intriguing, with the inclusion of the large FG. Have to mention about the sky as well, the clouds are marvellous as they take the sunset hue!
Best regards

This is gorgeous, Kath. I'm sure I wouldn't have done it without a tripod ;-) I agree with you. Sunset without clouds losts most of the beauty. But both the stones in FG and the mountain on the other margin contribute much for the success of your picture. Technically this is fantastic.
Henk (Floydian) and LuisAfonso are always pushing me with the tripod issue...I went to check it out. Too heavy - I'm too lazy to carry that stuff. I don't even want to carry the zoom. The snowboard items seemed more atractive to me... ;-)

Oh, I'm too lazy to carry my tripod to such places, that's why I admire your shots, the layers of the rocks are well managed, I love the colour of the sky...
It's worth carrying all that stuff:)

Hello Kath ,
Of course , clouds are necessary for a beautiful sunset . This sky is a pretty one , for sure . But what is the main feature here , is the combination of the boulders in the FG , with the remarkable pyramidal shape of the mountain (as in a previous post) . So , the result is a great picture .

A beautiful sunset, all the shades of red shows us that the winter is fast approaching. The details of the long pebble beach and the sharpness of them.
The silhouettes of the mountains in the background, a beautiful composition.
I love it

hi Kath,
looking at these clouds I have to think about a dessert my mother makes, rough translation would be "heavenly semolina"; semolina is cooked together with cranberries and then whipped in a mousse and served with cold milk. the Latvian name of the dish is also used to express delight and pleasure, like "this new job is a "heavenly semolina" for her" :)
love the photo, the pink colour cast creates a feeling of cozy protection, as if everything was wrapped in a pink blanket. nice, very nice :)
best,
Kristine

Hi Kath,
This capture is impressive as the one linked in your note - very nice, worth a second visit for certain. I have question about the use of the ND Grad filter - it looks like either you have the grad turned a little diagonally or was the photo cropped so that there is less foreground than in the original frame? Either that or perhaps you used one of those Cokin-like filters that you can move up and down in front of the lens. Just curious because I'm wondering exactly how you used the grad to get that effect. I was trying to find an area where there might be a delineation, however slight, and the diagonal theory works best if I were to guess.
Anyway, beautiful result!

Excellent light management. The ND grad really did the trick here. These high cirrus clouds provide a pattern as they fan out. The wide angle really accentuates the clouds as well.

Hi Kath, I see the birthday girl is in fact giving US the present here! How true are your words that clouds maketh the sunset. Whilst you have been blessed with amazing cloud formations, your metering skills have been shown to full effect. It's a masterful shot, where the ND grad has been used to optimal effect. I disagree with Kari (although I thank him and you for your informative discussion) the light in the FG is essential to making this image so luminous and providing such a beautiful contrast to the Cuillins behind. Congratulations, fantastic work Kath, have a lovely day, Lisa

The show goes on...
(You have a quicker pace than me, I can't follow you! (:-)
This photo has so many beautiful features for me that I don't know where to start! Of course the composition is harmonious, with a great sense of perspective and distance, but I think it's the kind of light here that strikes me most. The light that lits the pebbles in the fg so clearly, the light (and colour) reflected by the sea, and even the light in the distant mountains.
Generally sunset photos have dark siluhettes in fg or bg, but here - due to the lateral light - everything is vibrating with light. You really captured a magic moment.
TFS,
Donato

Hello Kath! Mammamia!!! Who wants to go inside and eat when you see THIS. The pebble beach is a wonderful foreground. I can spend hours looking for the nicest stone or sea shells and bring them home. My collection grows and each tells a little story from a wonderful vacation. This photo is such a pearl, a wonderful photo and yes the clouds, they are amazing. Hi Kath,
What a fabulous sky!! However, it's much more than a pretty sunset with the diagonal of rocky beach in the FG balanced by the peak. The long exposure enhances the reflection on the loch while the small aperture gives sharp detail on the land. Just beautiful!!

Hello Kath,
There is little doubt that sunsets need clouds, also dust and debris from volcanic eruptions. In this instance the polished stones on the beach make a very good subject against the background sunset. Moreover the peak is very close to the golden ratio, 1:1.62
