Photographer's Note
The White Horse at Kilburn was completed in 1857 by volunteers. It is 314ft (95.7m) long and 228ft (69.5m) tall. The rock isn’t naturally white so it has to be painted regularly by local residents who have set up a charity fund for the preservation of the white horse: the Kilburn White Horse Association
.
Kilburn is a small village in the North Yorkshire National Park. I marked the White Horse on the map (link right). You can see it very clearly, which probably gives an even better idea how large it is than on the photo. I'm not so sure of my point of view, but it was by the roadside just before entering Kilburn village. Scroll down the map to see the village.
This is the first TE entry from Kilburn. Unless someone 'placed' the White Horse somewhere else I guess this is also the first photo of it.

Hello Kath,
I quite like the point of view, the curve in the road makes a pleasing juxtaposition with the horse, whilst the house in the bottom right is also nicely placed. The verdant colours of the landscape look superb and help the horse stand out. Excellent sharpness.

Hi, Kath. A nice view of the English countryside and a famous landmark as well. There is a good balance in your composition with the cottage nicely placed on the right and the horse on the left. the road leads us gently into the picture. The green tones a real delight.
I think there is another horse like this one in the south of England, but can't remember exactly where.
Have a nice day,

Hello Kath,
Amazing how many strange local traditions there are around the world. The horse is more clearly visible in the ws, but this POV provides the outstanding picture. The horse and the pretty little house balance each other perfectly. The bend of the road is a nice inclusion.
Kind regards,

Kath,
This is a fine landscape shot. The road in the foreground creates a nice lead in for the shot. The white horse stands out nicely against the green hill. The lighting and colors are fine and the photo has excellent sharpness.

Hi Kath,
Quite fantastic to see this white horse in the satellite view as well! This is also a fine view, well balanced with the modern house here. I know Peter "graffer" har posted some photos of other white horses here on TE. I remember seeing one from a bus window, somewhere near Marlborough (long before the M4 was built). Peter told me that must have been another horse, so there are apparently a few of them in England.
Very interesting anyway!
Kind regards
Gunnar

Hi Kath,
An excellent and original TE contribution. The white horse of top of the hill is really great and it is perfectly balanced by the house. This landscape and the positions of different elements do not make it easy to keep to the rules of composition. Nevertheless, I think you have done a superb job with the composition. The lighting is a bit strong and would have love to see an early morning picture. TFS and have a nice evening!
Kind regards,
Ulf

Is it a natural rock formation and only painted by man? Or was it a very old handmade by man? The map viw show very well the horse, it is really impressive that no plants gerown there.

The framing is very beautiful and I think that the tripod was essential for this excellent result on f/16 and 1/50. Sharpness is also a top point here. Very beautiful job. (Very interesting the white horse)

Hello Kath,
This is a charming rural scene, where the typical house is well placed in the frame!
The fine spring light makes the landscape vibrate with life, the fresh foliage and some trees in blossom...
And of course the White Horse - was that originally a whisky commercial..?

Olá Kath, that's a very strange feature and it's impressive how massevily big it seems in the map. No doubt at all that I prefer this one to the WS. It's a much wider view with lots of details to apreciate from corner to corner. And I think that lovely house makes a great diagonal with the horse. I sure wouldn't mind to live in there...and of corse I also wouldn't mind to participate in the conservation of the horse.

Hi Kath,
You're right, this is a prettier photo showing the details of the pastoral village, but I can see your quandary, the 'horse appears more natural framed by the foliage. So thanks for posting them both.

Hi Kath,
This natural sign is an English couterpart from the American version on the hill of Hollywood... :-P) Well, let's say that the decor is much more pastorale and picturesque.
All the texture and superposed layers add a lot of dimension. The frame is filled with light and bursting colours.
Cheers!

Hello Kath,
I had no idea that there was a large white horse in Yorkshire; I have seen others down south!
This is so picturesque!
The little cottage in the f/g sets the scene beautifully and is nicely positioned in the frame. It perfectly balances the huge white horse, the second focal point. Good dof and well saturated.
Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Kath
I did not see the horse at first and I was wondering about the title of your photo! I thought it was about the house and possibly they started White Horse scotch from there :-P...but then when I scrolled up to see the location (Yorkshire), I saw THE horse. Actually the house is a strong focal point and so is the road, and the fact that the horse is 'lying down' made it difficult to spot for me. As a picture this is definitely better (fine work if I may add), but IMHO, for showing the horse as the main subject, the WS is better and well framed too!
Best Regards
Angshu

Hi Kath,
really a fantastic impression – and very well composed - of this beautiful landscape that is decorated with a peculiar horse. (Never heard about it before). The atmosphere of spring is fascinating. And it is this typical house that makes the image very attractive. I also enjoyed reading your interesting note including the nice title. TFS!

Hi Kath
Missed this one. The thumbnail doesn't do this justice as the white horse painting is not readily apparent until you actually open it. Good colour, sharpness & diffused light with a good pov & superb splashes of Fall colors here & there. The curved road adds good lead in lines to the cottage. Tfs!

Hello Kath,
Interesting benchmark for the pilots of all kind of air machines !!! Thank you for visualization on the map what gives us a good additional scale on the size of this stone horse. Pretty development of this curiosity in this beautiful green environment where this house of foreground gives much balance to the image. Originality and beauty in this photograph, thank you Kath for the complementary photograph also.

I had seen these white drawings on the hills of Britain before (in Encyclopedies or such) but I thought they were drawn in ancient times for some religious purpose. I'm surprise to read this one was drawn only one century ago. Why? Is there a kind of tradition or meaning for such a things?
I really like how you set the fine house to the low right and the horse to the upper left, there is a kind of symmetry between them, and I do like the lovely countryside with lawns, trees and sheeps. I's a charming sight of old dear England, well composed and with brilliant colours.

Hello Kath,
The different green hues in this landscape allow us to see clearly the huge white horse in the rock, which creates a strong chromatic contrast.
The house and the curve of the road included in your framing are two graphical very interesting elements in the composition.
The alternative photo in the WS completes the visual information, and the note helps us to know this place.
A great work.
Best wishes,
Josep
