Photographer's Note
A Hallowed Morning Everyone,
Here is a spooky image for Hallowe'en ... Glastonbury Tor!
On the day we visited the tor, although the weather forecast had promised bright sunshine over the whole country, the area around Glastonbury and Glastonbury Tor remained steeped in mist.
I was considering how to photograph the site when a tall girl, dressed in black, lifted her iPhone and completed the image for me!
I will add a view up to the Tor as a workshop.
'Glastonbury Tor rises like a beacon above the Somerset levels. Visible for over twenty miles, it floats like an island over the misty, verdant landscape. There's something almost mystical about this hill and the ghostly tower atop it. Even if you're not there on pilgrimage, when you catch sight of Glastonbury you'll understand its allure for pagan and Christian alike.
In Glastonbury, legend and history meet. The reality is straightforward: a majestic ruined abbey and church set in a charming, offbeat English town unique for its sheer number of New Age and magic shops. But behind the facts lurk legends of Arthur, the Holy Grail, and even the idea that a young Jesus may have visited Britain.
In ancient times, the Somerset levels were a shallow, marshy sea. Then, Glastonbury Tor was an island. Neolithic peoples in the region built platform villages linked by wooden causeways, arguably the first man-made roads.
At some point, no one knows exactly when, the Tor became a sacred site. Viewed close up, its slopes are subtly terraced, and some scholars speculate that it forms a remnant of a Neolithic labyrinth. The Celts called it Ynys Witrin, or the Isle of Glass, and believed it was a gateway to the underworld. Later legend has it that the Tor is the Island of Avalon, burial site of King Arthur ... Hi Bev,
Difficult light with fog, good result with the vertical format, ideal of course and also the detail with the lady, well taken.

Hello Bev,
I wonder if that woman in black will ever find out what a great favour she did for you. Her presence lifts the photo to a higher level. Not that she looks that spooky, but she is so well placed and the gesture she makes with her phone makes us look even closer at her. (But I also wonder what kind of photo she took from that angle.)
The Tor is majestic and the haziness probably makes it look even more interesting. I also read your note with great interest.
Kind regards,
Gert

Bonjour Beverly,
J'aime beaucoup ce cadrage vertical. Il accompagne à merveille la ligne très élancée de cette belle tour de pierres. J'aime la personne à côté qui fournit une belle relation dimensionnelle.
Bon samedi

Hi Bev
Boo! :) haha, a nice spooky scene for the day and even before I read your note I thought how much the lady in black really makes this photo, she could be the banshee of the castle emerging at dusk for a night of spooky happenings. Very apt post. Have a great day!

Hi Bev,
You may not have a deep blue sky but at least there is no choking haze from air pollution like in China and India. The mist and fog add mood and atmosphere. The tower is nicely framed and centred and reminds me of some of the towers in Prague except it is less lavishly decorated. The 2 people animate the scene. Tfs!

Hello Beverley,
Great capture of this large and lonely tower. Your POV makes it look impressive. The lady with her iPhone was a very nice inclusion indeed. The foggy view of the fields in the background adds a nice mood, I think.

A scared tor, Beverly, why and for what... it is a lone edifice on a high hill, the mist added mystery to the story. Interesting stuff after all.
Good choice to add some life with the tall lady and her cell posing.
Have a nice sunday,
Ike

Hi Bev
perhaps not the best of days to capture this scene, espcially frustrating when the weather forecast predicted something much better - i hate that!
seems like now days we can capture anybody posing for a selfie with any subject.
have we seen this subject before, I think John has posted it once or twice no?
misty air, but what can you do, I still like it for its history and allure.
cheers

Ciao dear Bev
Boo! I hope you had a fun-filled, spooky Halloween. This certainly looks haunted, even in the daytime. I can only imagine how eerie it must be at night. Excellent vertical frame, sharpness and - by the inclusion of the person - sense of perspective and scale. Superb work.
Un abbraccio

Hi Bev,
we have a lot of fog recently in the north east. But I see this one was taken before. So this is taken with your new camera, yes, I think camera dealing better with poor light may be useful for winter time :)
I hope I will have the pleasure to meet you with your new camera this Sunday.
Nice composition with the girl taking photo of the tower.
The fog makes everything quite grey but I am surprised by how good the white-grey sky looks here. My camera usually overexposes the white sky, I have to either focus on the architecture loosing sky completely or focus on the sky getting just silhouettes of the buildings. But I doubt I will be getting new camera any time soon :(
Very suitable for Halloween mood,
M

Hello Beverley,
The photo is good, the sort of photo that would be seen in the old Pitkin publication. But here it is the young woman who makes the photo. Your note is first rate and for the first time I've come to understand the tower's significance.
Warm regards,
Bulent
