Photographer's Note
Grace Darling was born on 24th November 1815 in her grandfather's cottge in Bamburgh. At the 3 weeks, she was taken to live with her father on Brownsman Island, in the Farne Islands, where her father was the lighthouse keeper. In 1826 the family moved to a new lighthouse on Longstone.
At 4.00am on September 7th 1838 during a violent storm, the steamship Fortarshire struck the Big Harcar rock on the Farnes, and over 40 lives were lost.
Grace saw the wreck, half a mile from the longstone, and at 7.00am spotted survivors. William Darling thought the conditions would prevent the launching of the Seahouses lifeboat, so he and Grace, now aged only 23, launched their cobble in atrocious conditions. The strength of both the tide and the wind forced them to row for nearly a mile to avoid the jagged rocks and reach the survivors.
Here William went ashore, while Grace all alone kept the cobble in position. Rowing against the wind and tide, they took five survivors back to the lighthouse. William and two of the crew then returned to fetch the rest.
On 20th October 1842, only four years after this truely heroic and now famous rescue, Grace died of tuberculosis.
The picture i have posted is of one of the North East of England's most famous heroine, Grace Darling.

Hello Chris,
A very nice resting place for this lady,Grace Darling
Fine details in your photo.
A well preserved grave.
Thanks your note about this lady, her heroic act about the rescue. Sad that she died so young.
Regards
Robert

I really like this tomb and photographed it some years ago (though I was much luckier with the light) - Grace Darling.
I sometimes find it hard photographing against blank skies like this, but this works well in outlining the upper part of the memorial.
cheers
Alastair
