Town Hall Square, a photo from Avila, Castilla y Leon

Photographer's Note

The Town Hall is the main building on the Plaza del Mercado Chico in Avila. The square is one of the town's central areas along with Plaza de San Vicente. These squares started to take shape with the repopulation of Бvila at the end of the 11th century.

The first Town Hall was built on this spot in the sixteenth century. However, the plaza and town hall building subsequently fell into ruin in the mid-18th century and the Council was forced to launch a project to improve their appearance and build a regular-shaped plaza with a colonnade.

The building you see now was built between 1839 and 1845; it was altered and extended between 1862 and 1868. It has a Spanish Isabelline style and the front is made of granite ashlar work with a geometrical composition.

Cette mairie garde une certaine classe architecturale. Nйo-classique mais bien agrйable tout de mкme.
Les bвtiments modernes ont choisi de faire entrer la lumiиre dans les йdifices, les faзades sont parfois originales, mais je reste un passйiste, du moins du cфtй architecture ! ;o)

What intrigues me here is the total lack of people near the Town Hall. Other than the skip a good photo of classic architecture.

The grey path at right adds linear perspective and guides the eye directly through the courtyard to the flag bedecked town hall with its clocktower nicely framed between two taller towers. Tfs!
