Here is a shot of a penitent who took part in the procession of Palm Sunday of Malaga.

The Holy Week in Malaga is a tradition that dates back to the age of the Catholic Monarchs. The taste for Baroque art by the religious brotherhoods and associations and the great amount of processional materials that they have been accumulating for centuries result in a street stage of exuberant art, full of colour and majesty. Every year, during the Passion Week in Malaga takes out to the streets a real festival perceptible by the five senses: processional thrones carrying images that are swung all along the entire route, thousands of penitents lighting and giving colour with their candles and robes, processional marches, as well as aromas of incense and flowers filling the air as the processions pass by and thousands of people crowded to see and applaud their favourite tronos (floats, thrones). Hello Gosia, my neighbour today !
The capture itself is well balanced and quite interesting but it would be just great if you could add a little bit more information about what is what. Specially for those (like me) who do not know the christian iconography !

Hi Gosia,

A beautiful study in purple, with some flashes of silver. The photo is sharp enough to show all the details of the fabric. The eye is the only indication of a human in the photo.Excellent composition and exposure.

Hello Gosia,
This is a fantastic photo. It's superbly elegant with this dominance of simple shapes and strong colours, and the eye peeping through the hole has a remarkable effect. For a non-believer this is a strange but undeniably fascinating view. It also makes me think of Ku Klux Klan, football hooligans or separatists occupying government buildings in eastern Ukraine. There are various reasons for hiding faces in public.

Hello Gosia - This is fascinating. I am struck by the special Palm Sunday robes and wonder what the origins are. Covering the face seems to be a strange thing for a religious ceremony and more akin to those who wish to remain incognito.

Your shot is stunning; the colour and detail in the robes is superb and I like the way the eye is framed by a sea of purple.

A cleverly composed shot that focuses on a detail from the Holy Week procession. The eye of the penitent makes a superb and unusual focal point. The sumptuous colours and detail in the costume are beautifully rendered under a good light.

A superb event but chilling when men mask their faces in what appear to be Klan suits (except for it' colour) evil is afoot!! A bit like finding a jew dressed as a Nazi (no offence meant, just an illustration). I take it that like lots of things, this clothing has meant something peaceful for hundreds of years, until someone decided to corrupt it. Again, the swastika comes to mind, which in Japan is a symbol of peace...
You have done a fine job photographing this event, a fine 'street' portrait, Congrats and tfs

Wspaniały pomysł, zeby pojechać do Andaluzji na Semana Santa i zobaczyć te procesje w dziwacznych strojach. Ale wyobrażam sobie, jaki tam musiał być tłok.
Fantastyczne zbliżenie, czyżbys tez brała udział ?:). Ta fioletowa tkanina "jak żywa". Super zdjęcie.
J jadę do Malagi i innych miast andaluzji w maju, już nie mogę sie doczekać.

Hello Gosia,

This one could and should win an award for all kinds of categories, all too many to mention. The composition, colors, definition are all first rate. The only fleshy part of the image is the left eye. But then, according to the center-line-principle this takes a prize for that category as well. I want to clear some space among my personal favorites, so that I can elevate this photo there.

Stunning purple traditional costume from a very close range. Not seeing much except for the eyes, fixed at some object in a distance - and with a great concetration. Hands cover white gloves are fine posture holding the silver rod.
Beautifully collected an impressive sight.

this is an extraordinary portrait in very particular context. I like very much how you filled the frame with these mesmerizing purple tones and elaborate textures. Everything becomes significant in a composition like this, the eye and the hands are so attractive, the sceptre and the shadows even add meaning and atmosphere. It is a kind of shot I am not really practicing but I am able to see when it is well done.
A very good composition and shot at the right moment: the placement of the hands with the sceptre and the overall purple background.

No wonder why your DE-M5 is so highly ranked in Digital Camera Review; the sharpness is outstanding, to the point I can see all the embroidery secrets on the ritual mask and the eye lashes!
The face mask could be mistaken though for a Ku Klux Klan item of clothing.

Salut Gosia,

This is a very attractive and intriguing shot.

By opting to crop that scene so tightly, you have captured the mystery of this religious procession in a brilliant way. Every elements in the frame are useful , offering to the viewer the essential accessories that compose the uniform of the penitent.

The eye is obviously the focus of attention, standing out from this dominant of purple, and the posture of the hands reinforce the perception of secrecy.

I have attempted a workshop that suggest a more intimate approach, closer to the subject and cropping the lower part where the white sleeve and black corner are preventing to feature an integral purple coverage, for more impact and uninterrupted canvas. It also allows for the eye to be less centered and disposing of more space in front of your subject that provide a sense of direction.

This is a shot I would really like to have in my gallery.

This is an admirable image that I like a lot. The overall purple is striking and then the eye just pops out amongst everything as a great detail together with the silver staff. A wonderful documentary of this tradition, with perfect sharpness where it should be.
