9 Fountain of Neptune. Along with Cibeles, Neptuno is one of the most beautiful and majestic fountains in Madrid. Both gods occupy prominent positions within the Greek mythological hierarchy and compete in the sporting arena, as Atlético de Madrid fans celebrate their victories in the Plaza del Dios del Mar, while Real Madrid do so in Cibeles.

As part of Ventura Rodríguez's original project, both fountains were, at first, facing each other, looking at each other on one side of the Paseo del Prado. Both Cibeles and Neptuno underwent restructuring and relocation processes at the end of the 19th century, finally occupying the center of the Cibeles and Cánovas del Castillo squares, respectively.

The paternity of the sculpture is not very clear, since it was commissioned to Juan Pascual de Mena, a sculptor who died before completing it; however, there are documents that prove that the work was continued by his disciple José Arias. As for the monumental complex, on a rocky base the shell-shaped float emerges, pulled by the two seahorses, symbols of storms and rough seas. The work represents the god of the sea, with his trident, on a shell-shaped chariot pulled by two seahorses.

With the Apollo fountain, or the Four Seasons, and the Cibeles fountain, it was part of the decoration for the Prado Hall, designed by Carlos III. The Plaza de Neptuno occupies a central place on the Paseo del Prado and is home to the Westin Palace Hotel and the Mandarin Oriental Ritz, two of the most historic hotels in Madrid.

9 Fuente de Neptuno. Junto con la Cibeles, Neptuno es una de las fuentes más bellas y majestuosas de Madrid. Ambos dioses ocupan puestos prominentes dentro de la jerarquía mitológica griega y rivalizan en el terreno deportivo, ya que la afición del Atlético de Madrid celebra sus victorias en la plaza del dios del mar, mientras que la del Real Madrid lo hace en la de Cibeles.

Como parte del proyecto original de Ventura Rodríguez, ambas fuentes fueron, en un principio, enfrentadas, mirándose la una a la otra en un lateral del Paseo del Prado. Tanto Cibeles como Neptuno experimentaron a finales del siglo XIX procesos de reestructuración y traslado, pasando finalmente a ocupar el centro de las plazas de la Cibeles y de Cánovas del Castillo, respectivamente.

La paternidad de la escultura no está muy clara, ya que fue encargada a Juan Pascual de Mena, escultor que murió antes de completarla; sin embargo, existen documentos que acreditan que la obra fue continuada por su discípulo José Arias. En cuanto al conjunto monumental, sobre una base rocosa emerge la carroza con forma de concha, tirada por los dos hipocampos, símbolos de las tormentas y del mar agitado. La obra representa al dios del mar, con su tridente, sobre un carro en forma de concha tirado por dos caballos marinos.

Con la fuente de Apolo, o de las Cuatro Estaciones, y la de Cibeles, formaba parte de la decoración para el Salón del Prado, proyectado por Carlos III. La Plaza de Neptuno ocupa un lugar central en el Paseo del Prado y en ella se sitúan el Hotel Westin Palace y el Mandarin Oriental Ritz, dos de los hoteles con más historia de Madrid.
