This picture shows the entrance to a luxury hotel in a historic building located in Obradoiro Square. This large square is the heart of the city, it is in front of the main entrance to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Thousand of pilgrims making their way to this location for centuries on the trail of the Way of St. James (El Camino de Santiago) to the tomb of St. James the Great, one of the 12 apostle of Jesus Christ, in the this Cathedral. Unfortunately when I was there in 2010, the Cathedral's entrance to this square was closed for renovation, and was covered with scaffolding, but there is a nice picture of it on TE here .

The full name of the hotel whose entrance is shown here is Hostel of the Catholic Monarchs (Hostal de los Reyes Catolicos), it is located beside the Cathedral. It was built by King Ferdinand and Isabel in the late 15th century as a hostel and hospital for the pilgrims. In 1954 Franco decided to convert it to a hotel of the state owned Parador chain. The artwork on the facade was completed in 1501, and it is full of symbolism. On its three levels the Earth, Church and the Heaven is represented with full figure statues, starting with Adam and Eve at the bottom and and Christ and Virgin Mary in the top row. The portrait of the King ind Queen is there too, in medallions.
