Photographer's Note

Tucked in the northwestern corner of Slovenia, between Austria and Italy, Lake Bled's emerald-green waters create a spectacular landscape, with a lush, tiny island and a church tower peeking out of evergreens surrounded by the rocky, snow-covered Julian Alps. Lake Bled comes complete with a sweeping alpine panorama, fairy-tale island, cliff-hanging medieval castle and lakeside promenade.

The first official mention of Bled was in the year 1004, when Holy Roman Emperor Henry II turned it over to the Bishops of Brixen.

Bled proudly celebrated its millennium in 2004. Since the Hapsburg days, Lake Bled has been the place where Slovenes have wowed visiting diplomats. Marshal Tito had one of his vacation homes here, while more recent visitors have included Prince Charles and Madeleine Albright.

It was frustratingly cloudy & cold in Europe the entire week, when we travelled from Paris to we travelled to Bled flicker of hope...we saw signs of the clouds clearing and then the sunlight broke through the clouds (and after that was summer! :-))
