Photographer's Note
A late blue hour shot of the floodlit Timisoara Opera House (Opera Națională Română din Timișoara). It shares the building with the Mihai Eminescu National Theatre. Completed in 1875, the building was twice devasted by fire in 1880 & 1920 but rebuilt both times. During the Ceaușescu regime, protestors stormed the building in December 1989, and gave speeches from the central balcony to the crowd of 40k people in the square aggrieved by the behaviour of Ceaușescu. Timisoara was the first Romanian city to protest, and the movement took off all over Romania to depose Ceaușescu.

Hello Chris,
If I remember correctly this was quite near where I was staying, so I have seen the opera in this light (without taking any photos). It is a very elegant building and it looks quite impressive with this illumination. The silhouettes of people create a nice atmosphere.
Regards,
Gert

BOnjour Chris,
La présence des personnes a un effet d'échelle de grandeur. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails de la maisons de l'Opéra de Timisoara. La lumière de l'heure bleue a un effet spécial sur les couleurs de l'image. Bonne journée.

Hello Chris,
A good night capture of this large and impressive opera house. It is illuminated very nicely, just as the buildings on both sides, which creates a very nice play of light and makes the city stand out well from the deep blue sky.

Hello Chris,
The Romanians were well rid of Ceaușescu!
This building looks so romantic, highlighted by the artificial lighting, which accentuates the arch and the columns! The couple add an extra bit of atmosphere, too!
You did well without a tripod and limited natural light!
Have a good w/e,
Bev :-)

Night sight of this building offers a better view than a daytime picture, Chris, saw on the web an image from sometimes ago, the illumination gave it an exquisite look.
Fine camera settings, well done.
Have a nice weekend,
Ike

Hello Chris,
I remember the turbulent history of the country in the year 1989 because in those days a Belgian reporter also died there.
Romania did not have a 'soft revolution' like for example Czechoslovakia.
I didn't remember that this Opera House played an important role in those days.
Excellent and very attractive night shot.
It's a pity that the puddle wasn't a bit bigger because it shows good reflections.
Best regards, Paul

Hi Chris,
Nice architecture and good blue hour photo.
As you wrote it is a late blue hour already but also the building is not uniformly lit. Sometimes I complain that places like that are not lit at all but sometimes they are lit without a plan. Or maybe they lit is in a n original way.
There are few options in that situation: 1. Record multiple exposures for HDR, which sometimes does not help if there is something moving, or 2. try earlier blue hour or even before the actual blue hour if the lights are too bright.
Of course you cannot just go back there and try again so I understand that on the road you sometimes have to take it or leave it :)
I like the dark silhouettes of people passing by here.,
Very well done,
M
