Photographer's Note
Bairro Alto (literally: Upper District) is a central district of the city of Lisbon, the Portuguese capital. Unlike many of the civil parishes of Lisbon, this region can be commonly explained as a loose association of neighbourhoods, with no formal local political authority but social and historical significance to the urban community of Lisbon.
The bairro or "neighbourhood" resulted from urban expansion in the 16th century, forming outside the walls of the historical city, and is characterized by an almost orthogonal tract developing from two phases of distinct urbanization.
It is a fundamental quarter of Lisbon, organized into a hierarchical scheme of roads and lanes: the roads, the structural axis, run perpendicular to the river; and the lanes, or secondary axis, cut parallel to the river. The matrix of allotments reflects the persistent use of the medieval layout; the division and multiplication of this module had its origin in the variations of the architectural typology.
The space constructed is dominated by living spaces implanted in long narrow lots, of three to four storeys in height, with asymmetric facades consisting of windows along the various storeys and staircases along the lateral flanks. Although less representative, the Pombaline-era buildings are common, essentially introducing modifications to the level of the façade's composition. Although there are many typological variations to the facade designs, certain elements are repeated, such as the corners, bay and sill windows, eaves and attics, securing a homogeneous urbanized front.
The Bairro Alto was born as a response to the social and economic transformation in Lisbon in the second half of the 15th century. Commercial development caused the growth in the population, and an associated expansion of construction within the medieval walled city. It was this phenomenon that resulted in the urbanization process of the Bairro Alto district.

Hello Stephen,
Amazing depth, the street seems so long, with an end. We see two tiny persons there, one in red. Nice colours in spite of the cloudy weather. Nice building with the facade from azulejos.
Kind regrads Malgo

Hello Stephen,
Another fine photograph from Bairro Alto, very similar to your last one but with an even bolder and more striking diagonal or oblique composition with remarkably strong perspective. And yet, despite the strong perspective, you have managed this with no evidence whatsoever of any distortion.
The light and colours are delightful and I like the sheen of the cobblestones. Perfect exposure and exquisite depth of field and sharpness throughout.
Excellent!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hi Stephen
great looking vertical shot you have here my friend.
that blue tiled wall really is a strong subject, as is the wet cobbled stone on the ground. I also like how the long street is offset to the right a bit, thats clever and works so well.
fine shot
cheers

Hello Stephen,
This is a case where I don't mind at all the emptiness of the street. The converging diagonal lines of the walls and the black cobbled street (with nicely reflected light) have created a marvellous depth. I feel like I am pulled by a magnet towards the persons seen in the distance. The well processed dark sky helps to create a rather moody atmosphere. There is a fine balance between the dark clouds, the black street and the dark blue walls to the left.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Stephen,
This is a very strong composition!
There seem to be no projecting features to bar the rapid movement from the f/g to a strong vanishing point.
What I particularly like is the inference of wet cobbles, reflecting a hazy light and how their colours are copied in the view of the sky.
Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Hi Stephen
The length of the street is creating depth and perspective. The point of view is showing the details of the facade of the buildings. I like the effect of the rain on the colors. Have a nice day.

Hello Stephen
Although Lisboa isn’t Porto I think, if we compare you beautiful picture of this small street in the Portuguese capital wit the 1984 pictures of Gert from Porto we have a interesting impression of the improvement of the Portuguese economy.
Excellent work
Have a good weekend, groet Rob
