Washing Day at Torres Vedras, a photo from Lisboa, South

Photographer's Note

Similarly to my previous post I have chosen another washing line - this time from Torres Vedras (a city and about 50 km north of Lisbon).

The facade is beautifully decorated by AZULEJOS - traditional Portuguese tiles that are hand made and hand painted and they are used to decorate both exteriors and interiors of many houses in Portugal.

hi Romana,
ahhh, if there is an Eldorado for washing-day photos, it must be Portugal :)
these tiles remind me of certain dilapidated houses in Lisbon, their patterns and colours bring back memories of my strolls through the Alfama...
we have seen many washing-day pictures, it's true, and yet I always find them nice to look at, they are daily life at its simplest and best at the same time.

Yes, these drying clothes make a great topic, especially when they are combined with a typical background wall. Plenty of couleur locale guaranteed! This shot is a really great example. I like this one even more than your previous one. Splendid azulejos!

Washing Day!! I ask myself is this a shared washing line between three homes or three windows to one home??

Firstly though what a beautiful mosaic on the outside of the house - itself very unusual and beautiful.. I like your themes in your photos and well spotted -- I must say washing on the line is not something I would notice for a photo-- TE is good at getting me to see what others see when taking photos..

hi Romana,

there's something very relaxed about this washing line against the beautiful azulejos. I think you have managed to capture the sense that is so strong in Europe and almost totally absent in America - living everyday right in the middle of history, usually completely forgetting about that and not appreciating enough. well seen and presented.
