It is located about 4.5 km from the historic center of Sintra and is the most complete and beautiful specimen of Portuguese architecture of Romanticism. Its construction date of 1839, when the King Consort Dom Ferdinand of Saxe Coburg-Gotha, bought the ruins of the Hieronymus Monastery of Our Lady of Pena to adapt them to a palace.

The work was directed by Baron Eschwege, who was inspired by the palaces of Bavaria, to create a unique building which combines influences 'Wagnerian' other castles in Central Europe, with Moorish accents and gothic motifs and Manueline. A real 'princesses palace' at the top of the Sintra hills.
