Midnight Mass, a photo from Troms, North

Photographer's Note

It wasn't really a midnight mass, I just thought it would be a good title. It was early afternoon, it gets dark very early in Tromso in January.
I was attracted by the reflections. I could see both the people and the trees, the yellow artificial light and the blues of the dusk in the same frame.

Ale Ciebie zanioslo daleko na polnoc. Czy tam w ogole jest slonce w styczniu? Dlugi dzien to dobra rzecz, ale dlugie noce musza byc depresyjne. Ciekawe zdjecie z tymi odbiciami. To chyba nowoczesny kosciol bo ma takie proste okna. Artystyczna kompozycja. M

A multi layered shot! The inside mass, the outside reflection and the snow. A difficuly exposure to judge all those aspects of the light I imagine so very well done.

Oooh, I hope this means a few more Tromso shots are on their way? I've always wanted to visit northern Norway, and would love to see more of it through your lens here.

As for this shot, there's a great tension between the warmth of the indoors and the snowbound scene outside - those are some impressive snowdrifts! I'm actually surprised you had any light at all in Tromso in January - it must be close to perpetual night at that time. Bravo as well for 'hiding' in the window joist - a very effective way of avoiding a self-portrait.

like this! So creative and imaginatively conceived. Yes the title makes it all the more absorbing and attention grabbing but it is the elements and artistic feel about this shot that makes it work so effectively. Superb!

Hello Kasia,
I really have to give you credit for daring to be a bit experimental. Not everyone would take a picture like this and have the guts to show it in public. However different it's a very attractive photo with a fascinating combination of inside and outside, making it slightly surreal. The "midnight" light, assisted by the lamps, is very good.

troche tajemniczo ale i zimowo wyglada ten kolaz - odbicia i real tam w glebi. Snieg wprowadza szczegolny nastroj. Dobry pomysl na zdjecie.

This is an interesting experiment that works well, thanks to the contrast between the warm and welcoming light inside the church and the cold blues of the outside, enhanced by the falling snow. It is a picture where one has to concentrate on the different layers to see it all.

Hello Kasia,
I think that you've managed to capture both the inside and the outside mood wonderfully retaining details and colours of both the cozy interior of the church and the snowy winter scenery. Both settings look like reflections and if it weren't for the snowfall, maybe we wouldn't be able to tell where your vantage point was. Excellent idea, composition and lighting, congratulations and thank you!

Hi Kasia,

Very interesting shot, I love the different layers of iamges, the snow falling on the outside the window reflection, I am looking for your reflection on the window :) and the warm glow of the light inside the church with the procession and activities.

The blur of the snow suggest it's heavy snow and cold.

Another fine shot from the beautiful Arctic Cathedral. You have achieved a really good result here. A nice mixture of reflections and interior of the church. The reflected trees makes the scene very evocative. Beautiful light and good exposure. Very nice work:)
