Photographer's Note
Last friday night Bert and I went night hunting again ;-) This time we went to the harbour of the Harbour Museum, which is located in the center of the town.
I was very surprised that we could just walk around in the middle of the night.
Jansje, BTW, is a very old-fashioned Dutch name, and I would not call my tugboat 'Jansje'. To me it's more a name fro a mother of let's say seven kids, staying at home to take care of husband and their kids, peeling potatoes, and cleaning the haricots verts for dinner tonight.
The atmosphere was really lovely with old boats, old cranes, a little light house, worksheds on the left side of the picture and all sorts of other things. The funny thing was that they were still illuminated, while it was around 1.30 AM when we left. I love Rotterdam by day, but it's also worth while being out at night!
What you see is a wider view of Bert's picture of today.

How nicely atmospheric is this one, Rinie! I love the way the cranes are setoff by the old rhine boats. The DoF is perfect and the reflections of the cranes on the worksheds and the mtion blurred flag are the icing on this alleady tasty cake. Very nice one! We again had fun!
Bert.

bonjour Rinie,
old tugs and cranes are very présents in the night, you got a nice night ambiance. Les couleurs sont très réalistes et les détails dans la pénombre forts nombreux, ce qui est intéressant.
Avec Bertolucci, vous faites une sacré équipe !

I´ve already seen the photo of Bertolucci, now it´s your turn. This photo is a good compliment from Bert´s one (or all the way around)... I dont know if I like the darker part with the boats but in the other hand why not... The point is that both of you achive to give beauty to something created for practical reasons and not artistics one. Finally something I particulary like of this photo are the confusion of lines giving kind of barroque of the XX or XXI siecle to this photo. Rotterdam seems full of surprises.
PS: Also I appreciate the mood of 1:30 in the night. Tom Waits would like both photos.

Hello Rinie,
This is the kind of shots I like. Harbor scenes ! Keep them coming. I visited Rotterdam once in 1979...... It was quite impressive then already. We stayed from September 27th til October 12th. Quite a long stay. We had time to enjoy the city. I loved the harbor and the city. We were moored then in Maashaven. Good memories....
I posted a WS to see better the details in shaded areas. I hope you will like it.
Cheesr!

So you are getting addicted to this night owl business. If I were more competent in PS I would have made a WS renaming the boats Bert & Rinie, they look so cosy side by side:)
As a night shot it is very good, the lighting makes this very atmospheric, but the composition feels a bit cluttered. (maybe thats just me on a monday mornign)

Hi Rinie,
I like the mood in this shot a lot.
Excellent nightshot with perfect exposure control, even in the darker parts are the details visible.A fine perspective along the kais.

A good complement to Bert's posting which I just viewed, Rinie. The wide angle shows the harborside details of the cranes in a fine way, and the 6sec exposure results in a good rendition of the nighttime colors and ambience. A quite (over)loaded frame, but after looking at it for a while its inherent structure seems to grow on the viewer. Nice work.

Hi Rinie,
i like the busyness in this image, all these stuff makes a great graphism here in a strange way..i find the bottom part a little bit dark, but still works..
you had some great experiments in the night time in your home town as far as i see.. ;)
Best wishes..

There is a dutch schooner that often comes in the summer in Normandy, and she is called Jantje. Is that name from the same origin?
I like the night atmosphere very much here. I can see all the details and I like the colors on the crane. Robert's WS is interesting but it totally changes the mood of the picture.
Your night hunts are giving really interesting results, with pictures really different from one another.

Amazing illumination, and strong contrast between the more genuine boats in the foreground, which maybe suffers from the strong background.
Thanks,

SO many lines and colors mixed in that particular and aesthetic night atmosphere. Seems a bit chaotic at the first sight but the succession of blue, yellow and red lights in the background help to draw our attention. I'm not so fond of the completely blurred/out of focus third on the left side (The wind on the flags perhaps)...

not sure what you wanted to show here Rinnie. In fact i have difficulties distinguishing everything - but i am wtaching from a laptop, which prebably does not help. I guess the atmosphere was really pleasant from your note, but it does not really appear here.
amicalement, michel?
