Photographer's Note

The great cormorant is a very common and widespread bird species. It feeds on the sea, in estuaries, and on freshwater lakes and rivers. Northern birds migrate south and winter along any coast that is well-supplied with fish.
When I was a boy it was almost extinct in Holland - there was a protected colony left in the Naardermeer - but now you can see him even in the heart of the city.

The cormorant is posing beautifully and you capture it so well. Colours and lighting excellent.
I like the way one foot is tucked under the wing.

Goedenavond Gerrit,

Aalscholver fier als een gieter kijkend waar een visje te vangen is.
Een van de grootste vijand van de sportvissers.
In onze visvijvers moet men bewaking doen want ze vliegen met iets weg iedere dag.
Maar een mooie foto, bedankt.

I'm glad to hear this species managed to recover from near-extinction! They are such elegant birds, spend a lot of time preening or drying their spread wings.
Lovely photo with a good contrasting background thrown out of focus by your thoughtful choice of aperture settings.
