Photographer's Note
Maastricht.
Maastricht.
they say that wisdom comes with age. and yet you know what they say ' "there's no fool like an old fool"... how many books, or movies, or articles in the paper tell stories of people who seem to confirm this adage? older men who marry (much) younger women and have kids the same age of their grandchildren? women of a certain age who quit everything to go find their inner self in far away places? elderly couples who discover that life is now and squander a lifetime's savings in the pursuit of happiness?
what makes a person decide that it's time to reverse, to turn back, to leave the beaten track, the path society and conventions have laid out for them, even if that makes them look ridiculous, foolish, out of their minds? is it the feeling that the clock is ticking, that time is passing and life has not begun yet, that there are choices that cannot be postponed any longer..? what makes them leave behind responsibilities, relationships, certainties and beliefs that they used to hold on to and that now suddenly no longer count..?
and those who criticize them - is it only common sense that guides them, or an inner desire to do the same and the painful awareness of the impossibility of doing so..?
(I took this picture during the Maastricht carnival of 2011)

Ciao Paperetta
arrivi e mi tratti così?????
Bel modo di tornare....
La foto è comunque molto originale, come l'argomento, si parla molto di queste cose, ma non dalla parte dei nonni....
Ben tornata, spero vada tutto bene.
Saluti

Ciao cara Cristina. Pleasure to see your work once again. My first reaction was to think of one of Emir Kosturica's films about the Roma/Gypsies- in which he conveys the exuberance of life and a touch of pathos and mischief. I do wonder under what circumstances you took this photo. It seems staged (I mean like a performance on stage) yet it also looks like nonno's backyard as I can see a grapevine with ripe grapes. Whatever the set-up, it is a delightful photo and a great companion to your note. My best wishes. Klaudio.

Hi Cristina,
Your note find echoes through my own thoughts about the urgency to live fully and not postponing joy...
Talking about joy, what a shot you are presenting here! It is a treat for the viewers, a great character, a stunning black and white with great contrasts and so much details, textures, and an incredible collection of bells and whistles!
The frame is tight, the moment is great to capture a funny expression and the subtle touch of warm grey suits your image perfectly.
Nice and compelling work!

Ciao Cristina, Nice to see you here with this fantastic portrait.
Haha, when we get old, for you it is just the theme, for me it is reality. I use the time that is left, I do not postpone anything that I want to do. I travel. How long I will fit to go on the far trip with my backpack? who knows..
Warm regrads

Ciao Cristina,
What a character! The expression in his eyes is key. The dense textures work well here, the shadows and light are complex, perhaps like his character.
Cheers

Hi Cristina
thanks to your last sentence in your note, I understand your queer picture of this strange old man!
As usual, a very good B&W picture.
Cheers

A wholly unique, outstanding piece of photography, Cristina! Amazing high contrast brings this gentleman to life, but the B&W and his clothing and style remind me somehow of 1940s film. There's really almost a touch of lunacy here, and you've conveyed all of it brilliantly. This is a really tough photo to stop looking at! Straight to the favorites here... a real shame this has not gotten as much attention as it deserves.

Hello Cristina
Sorry to be late with my comments: I too have my off-site periods! This is a superb portrait of a theatrical and I guess extrovert old geezer. The expression, of course (a genuine decisive moment), and the lighting, are excellent. Framing is inevitably impeccable. I'm now wondering when I will start on my Shakespearean "Seventh Age" ("second childishness and mere oblivion, Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything"). Hoefully neither he nor I are quite there yet! Your photograph aptly illustrates Jaques' monologue from "As You Like It": "All the World's a stage, And all the men and women merely players".
It's in my favourites...
Kind regards
Will

Ciao Cristina,
Funny and yet a "busy" picture with many element within.
Choice of a B&W probably beause of the strong daylight on, but would be cheerfull to see how many colors would be in the scene.
Nevertheless, a well spotted moment.
Salute & arrivederci,
Ike
