The orange beauty, a photo from Milan, Lombardia

I had already posted a photo of this species, but the close-up view came out so well that I thought of proposing it again, also because it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful butterflies that I can observe in my area. It is a Melitaea didyma, belonging to the Nymphalidae family. Medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan of up to 35-50 millimeters. The upper part of the wings is a bright brown-orange with dark brown markings arranged in rows, which are quite variable in quantity and size. Sometimes in females the color is a duller orange, tinged with gray-green. The underside of the wings is checkered pale yellow and light orange. This butterfly flies from March to October.

Si tratta di una Melitaea didyma, un lepidottero appartenente alla famiglia Nymphalidae. Farfalla di medie dimensioni con un'apertura alare che raggiunge i 35-50 millimetri. La parte superiore delle ali и di un marrone-arancio brillante con segni in marrone scuro disposti in file, che sono abbastanza variabili in quantitа e dimensioni. A volte nelle femmine il colore и un arancio piщ opaco, sfumato di grigio-verde. La parte inferiore delle ali и di colore giallo pallido a scacchi e arancione chiaro. Questa farfalla vola da marzo a ottobre.

This is indeed a beautiful butterfly. And also the underside of wings are colourful, which is not so usual. Side view shows the whole butterfly sharp and we also get a good idea of the grassy terrain.
