La Superba

Next stop: Genoa (or Genova in Italian), the capital of Liguria. It is one of the most important port cities on the Mediterranean, especially historically in the centuries when Genoa was one of the most powerful maritime republics and when it was one of the wealthiest cities in the world, playing a leading role in commercial trade. Around 1451 it was also the birthplace of Christopher Columbus. Italian poet Petrarch gave the city her nickname: La Superba (The Proud One).

In this photo is Piazza De Ferrari, the main square in the city, well-known for its fountain. It is located in the heart of the city in between the historic and the modern centre.
