Rome – Via del Babuino – The “Baboon”
Babuino
From Wikipedia:
Il Babuino (Romanesco: Il Babbuino; Italian: Il Babuino, "The Baboon") is one of the talking statues of Rome, Italy. The fountain is situated beside the Chiesa di S. Atanasio dei Greci, in via del Babuino.
History
The statue is an ancient depiction of a reclining Silenus: a character in Roman mythology, half man, half goat. In 1581, Patrizio Grandi, a rich merchant, built a public fountain in the former via Paolina, which he had decorated with this statue. According to the custom established by Pope Pius IV he obtained free water for his house and fields in exchange for donating the fountain to the city. The people of Rome christened the figure "babuino" because they considered it ugly and deformed, like a monkey, and the street was nicknamed the "via del Babuino" as a result, the name eventually becoming the official one. After being moved to various other locations in Rome, the statue was returned to the street in 1957.
Political comment and graffiti
Pasquinades — irreverent satirical inscriptions poking fun at public figures — were posted beside the "talking statues" of Rome in the 16th century. The pasquinades (or, in Italian, pasquinate) of il Babuino are more properly called babuinate, but the principle of satirical criticism is the same.
The tradition of political comment continued as graffiti in modern times, to the extent that the fountain was considered an eyesore rather than an asset to this upmarket street. As seen in the 2002 photograph, the wall behind the statue was covered in graffiti, although not on il Babuino itself. Recently, the wall has been painted with an anti-vandal paint, to prevent the graffiti reappearing.

Il ne manque qu'une cigarette et une paire de lunettes pour que ce soit des jumeaux.Tu as très bien saisi , juste au bon moment cette ressemblance.

Hello Romano,
You made a brilliant observation. This is the kind of street photo I love. Its very amusing and original. The sharpness is not up to your usual level, but maybe you were in a great hurry before you were discovered.
Kind regards,

Hello Romano,
Lots to laugh at here! I am not sure which is the grumpiest, the statue or the man with the cigarette sat next him. Well spotted, this amusing situation. So sorry, I have exhausted all my smilies for today.

Ciao Romano
Saluti

Ciao Caro Romano,
You have attached very interesting notes with your photograph. I suppose it was best to have the fountain returned to its original place.
This, I feel, was a quick, spontaneous shot, to catch the man in situ, before he lit his cigarette and moved on. For that reason, the sharpness is not quite as sharp as usual but it is a really amusing shot, well worth your attention, as you noted the similarity in the faces.
I am surprised that he is unaware of you and your camera but that's all to your advantage.
Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Romano
Interesting history of this fountain as well as your picture with this man who seems wait for his wife with the bags on the floor and smoking a cigarette. A daily scene but not therefore less interesting.
Best wishes

Ciao Romano
I like the note you wrote explaining the image. I also like the humour in the image because one could ask who is the baboon?! Man or statue! Composition is very good in this image too.
Thanks and have a great day!

Ciao Romano
You show the perfect incentive to quit smoking that should be printed on cigarette packages with the mention: " See how cigarette can dry your arteries, to the point of making you looking like a petrified goat"!!
You could make a lot of money selling this picture to the tobacco industries.
Ciao.
Robert
