Photographer's Note

Day 5 : Jkulsrln - Hlaskjl

Last daylights on large river Skaft valley. Photo token from lava fields of Lambaskarshlar hills, born from an eruption in nearby Eldgj canyon between 934 and 940. These hills dominate Hlaskjl shelter, one of the very few accomodations in the area. It is not a comfortable place : no electricity (which complicates batteries management !), WCs and showers outside, tight dormitories, etc... But it is a perfect place to visit incredible nearby Eldgj canyon (this will be my next post !). Anyway you have no choice, this is the only accomodation tens of kilometers around ! But wake up with such a scenery has no price !

To take this photo I used a tripod because of low brightness (I took this photo at 10pm). I used too a graduated ND filter to balance the dark ground and the clear sky and keep the nice pink tones in the sky.

A funny anecdote about this photo (and a big fear for me) ... As I was about to take the picture, I noticed a spot in the left bottom corner. It looked like a splash. So I cleaned the filters, unset and interchanged lenses, checked the mirror, asked for help one of my travel companions. But the spot remained ... So I thought there was a serious problem with my camera, I thought all my photos would have this problem until the end of my travel ! And as I was desperate and thought about jumping in the river, I understood ... And I really felt ridiculous ... The spot was the steam of a waterfall downstream lol You can see the spot on the picture indeed ! You can see the joker waterfall as workshop. No need to say it was a great moment of solitude and my travel companion laughed at me !
