Photographer's Note

Castanea sativa is the European species of chestnut, a deciduous tree with edible seeds. It can reach 20 or even more than 30 m of height.

In Greece the seeds are ripe for gathering in late autumn (but always depends on the year). The seed has a hard capsule called "cupule" (which makes it totally painful if you try to gather the seeds bare-handed) and is usually gathered from the ground.

Here: A chestnut grove in Ano Chora of Oreini Nafpaktia, Aitoloakarnania, Greece. Even thought the chestnuts had obviously been planted in the field, they seemed to have been left completely deserted and unexploited. The ground was full of chestnuts (and mushrooms) and we gathered some (not more than a handful). I tried to take the photo from an angle that would create a nice contrast between the morning lit leaves on one side of the trees and the dark scenery.
