The hidden beauties of Cretan nature, a photo from Lasithi, Crete

Photographer's Note

Lasithi Prefecture is the less known, less travelled and discovered prefecture from all 4 of Crete, and in my opinion that's where exactly where its "charm" lies. Many secrets to be discovered by a traveller with time and love for exploration.

One of these secret is this beautiful gorge, called "Sarakina" located about 25 km to the west of my hometown, Ierapetra. You' ll have to take the west exit of the town, heading to Myrtos. You pass right beside this village and after 2-3 km you 'll turn right towards a village called Mythoi. About 3-4 km after Mythoi you will find the exit of the gorge. You'll have to go through a very narrow path in order to enter the gorge, which is relatively small and pretty easy to cross, as long as you are careful with the slippery rocks at some points. There is a small river crossing it and if you go all the way you will find some small waterfalls and tiny lakes.

About this photograph I can speak in superlatives,
I like everything! Starting from the composition, colors, location, form, which is almost the perfect pose.
Perfect photo, and leaves at the top add to the charm. Amazing feeling, beautifully illustrated atmosphere of the place.

in spite of not easy lighting conditions, your photo is almost perfect.Perfect the stone's details thanks to an excellent sharpness, good colours, clever the insertion of the human figure to give the proportions of the photographed place.A place that i know very well and that i loved to trek.

fantastic and spectacular place!In spite of the depth of the gorge,you have got a beautiful light,giving beautiful and luminous colors.I wonder what was the speed of your shot, because the effect of the water let me think that it was a long pose, but the woman is perfectly sharp.Maybe she aws not moving.Anyway, this is superbly framed,and I love the presence of this woman.

This is truly an amazing shot with every element captured with perfection. I like the vertical format giving us the large view of the gorge. The colors are superb. The lighting , atmosphere and sharpness are great. The lady on the small rock gives an idea about the size.

Hello Hercules - Your light management is remarkable and something I would really like to know more about. I see on your exif data there is no detail for length of exposure. Looking at the water you used a long exposure but the girl is pin-sharp. A combination of two shots? In any event the image is really top class both technically and creatively. I like the warm vs cold colour contrast between the blue jeans & the red ochre color tones of the rocky canyon. Looks a little like Antelope Canyon in Arizona. Very good sharpness & smart choice of a vertical frame. The motioned blurred water is great. Tfs!

I am speechless. This is such a beauty.
First of all I am really surprised to see such a view in Crete, it just tells me how little I know about the world.
The view is spectacular.
I admire your work here. The processing which well emphasized the texture of the rocks. The exposition which was so tricky. The water is rather smooth and yet the beautiful model seems completely frozen and so sharp and clear.
Including the girl in the scene plays a very important role -otherwise we would not be able to imagine the scale of this extraordinary place. Plus her colorful clothes add some more life and her skin by comparison confirms that the colors of the rocks are natural as well.

Beautiful post! Love the wide vertical format, I could imagine that this certain spot reminds me of antelope canyon. nice natural patterns, vibrant tones and fantastic colros. the inclusion of the lady is a nice bonus to the image, seems that she has discovered the hidden beauty of Cretan nature. A very well handled image also, nice blur on the water, i wonder how long was your exposure, was this hand held? if yes, then you must have steady hands! Great work!

Hello, what a wonderful image! A nice slow shutter speed helps provide a misty white color to the water. Good use of a vertical format to accentuate the high walls of the canyon. This represents a different view of what we often think of Greece. A natural world away from the cities.
