Photographer's Note
Look who's here!
Visiting Dresden Gemäldegalerie Alter Meister was high on our list of things to do when in Germany, mainly because I'm a fan of the German master painters Cranach and Dürer...but then we also met some familiar faces we didn't know were there!
---
RAPHAEL (1483–1520) was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. Together with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, he forms the traditional trinity of great masters of that period.
---
THE SISTINE MADONNA is an oil painting by Raphael, commissioned in 1512 by Pope Julius II for the church of San Sisto, Piacenza. In 1754 it was relocated to Dresden, where it achieved new prominence and was of enormous influence on the development of German and Russian art.

THE TWO PUTTI (winged angels) at the bottom of this painting are famous in their own right. Heavily marketed, they have been featured in stamps, postcards, T-shirts, socks and wrapping paper.
My wife bought a two putti case for her reading glasses, my daughter a pencil case, me I took the picture.
Enjoy life!

PS: If you want to see the whole painting, I recommend Mariusz' picture "Interaction with art", posted here on 2020-09-21.

Hello Benny,
This must be one of the most iconic details of any painting anywhere, comparable to God's and Adam's hands nearly meeting in the Michelangelo painting in the Sixtine chapel. And, as you mention, these putti have been just as much used for commercial purposes, or parodies, as the two hands. They are really quite fun to watch, but I had also no idea they live in Dresden. It was a nice surprise to you to find them, and they deserved a photo.
Regards,
Gert

Een heel klein deel van deze schilderij met deze twee engelen.

Hello Benny, I didn't know that these were known as the Two Putti, and I didn't know that they could be seen in Dresden, so a lovely discovery.
I like the tight crop where the ornate gold frame appears to be the ledge that they are leaning on!
Excellent.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hi Benny,
I really like how you have picked these two little angels from the edge of a painting. Their faces seem to be wondering something. Golden toned frame looks great too.

Bonjour Benny,
I love the way you framed them...
But why did it make me instantly think of “Waldorf en Statler”? ;)

Hi Benny,
thank you so much for advertising my photo. Of course I spotted these two angels straight away! They are so characteristic. I did feel guilty that by showing the whole painting I distracted people from these two angels.
I am glad you focused on the detail. The edge of the frame adds another nice touch.
Excellent capture!

Superb image of this detail. These two putti look as if they were watching the world the world go by (and the visitors photographing them) from their balcony.
You have just reminded me why Dresden is on my travel wish list (a crime really, considering how close to it I was born!).
Have a lovely weekend
Kasia
