Applied Arts
The Outdoor Spiral Cycle Parking Rack – Version Berlin.
We don't often realize how the design of the objects around us comes about. The design often comes from the function of an object and seems based on tradition.
We don't know any better; A chair has four legs, a seat and a backrest.
Yet a chair can be designed in many ways and it is often artists, architects who have gained fame with the design of chairs. You will find all these chairs in the design department of many museums.
For example, I eat every day with cutlery designed by Danish artist Arne Jacobsen. I’ve also seen it several times in a museum and you can still buy it.
Objects in our daily lives are often designed by industrial designers, specialized engineers who are educated to integrate functionality to appealing, aesthetic design.
The Outdoor Spiral Cycle Parking Rack – Berlin Version - on this photo series is certainly designed by a talented designer.
As usual I will zoom out in successive pictures.
Without bicycles attached to it, it could be an interesting statue in a street or square or maybe even in prison.
Unfortunately the designer remains unknown here.
You can find the Bicycle Rack at the entrance Potsdamer Platz of the Sony Center

Applied arts
The applied arts are all the arts that apply design and decoration to everyday and essentially practical objects in order to make them aesthetically pleasing. The term is used in distinction to the fine arts, which are those that produce objects with no practical use, whose only purpose is to be beautiful or stimulate the intellect in some way. In practice, the two often overlap. Applied arts largely overlaps with decorative arts, and the modern making of applied art is usually called design. source: Wikipedia.
Industrial design
Industrial design is a process of design applied to products that are to be manufactured through techniques of mass production. A key characteristic is that design precedes manufacture: the creative act of determining and defining a product's form and features takes place in advance of the physical act of making a product, which consists purely of repeated, often automated, replication. This distinguishes industrial design from craft-based design, where the form of the product is determined by the product's creator largely concurrent with the act of its creation. source: Wikipedia.

Hello Rob,
I saw a "strange" thumbnail and thought "that must be Rob's". ;-) And of course it was.
I'm not sure whether it's you or the designer who deserves most praise. The main photo is no doubt "yours". Not many members of TE would have got the idea to take a close-up of a cycle parking rack. Without any real sense of dimensions this may look like a part of an original silver necklace or another object only created for its beauty. In WS #1 you add fragments of red which we realize belong to a bike, and finally we get a regular street photo that reveals everything. The cycle racks still look above average elegant, but most of all they look functional.
The photos are all above average, and the main upload is so smart that it goes to my favourites.
Best regards,
Gert

Hello Rob,
I agree, this is a fine piece of design!
I like smooth curves; if I doodle, that is generally how it starts.
Your close-up expresses the design in smooth, curved lines; the chain, in circles and ellipsis, continuing the curves. It was a very smart decision to focus in so closely.
The w/s are interesting but this is the best!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Rob,
At first, I toght it was a big spring or abstract art. The point of view is showing the details of the bicycle rack. It is cleat and sharp. Have a nice day.

I like framing, composition and colors.
Excellent sharpness.
Well done.
Nice afternoon.

Hello Rob
From the thumbnail I could not make out the image. All I saw was abstract lines. Thought I was on TREKLENS by mistake. Nice capture for something different.

Bonjour, cher ami Rob,

Mooi in detail, scherp an goed van kleur.
Excellent foto werk, bedankt.
Prettige avond vanuit een regenachtig Vlaanderen,
John

Hi Rob!
I like your note about chairs a lota lot and when you have written that this is some art from xy in xy museum I would have believed you.
You have good eye to see the little things and present them in a good way.
A fine shot with very nice grey/chromatic colors.
Regards,Ronny
Stay healthy!

Dag Rob

Hello Rob, as Gert has already stated, this shot is so obviously one of yours with your distinctive style.
Excellent sharp focusing on the metal spiral and the chains with the rings.
I like all three shots but this is definitely the best.
We take good design for granted, and it takes someone like you to draw our attention to what seem like everyday objects.
Interesting notes.
Thanks for sharing, kind regards, Jean.

Hello Rob,
A superb close up of the corkscrew spiral bike rack with its security chain links adding vertical lines and repetition. Tfs!

Dag Rob,
If I did not read the title , I wouldn't know it's a cycle parking rack. What an unusual yet interesting to see in close-up, for sure. But as soon as I see on WS photos - it's just look so ordinary and I wouldn't have took a photo of it.
Well, it's only you....see the beauty and the artwork in photography. That's you have thought me one thing or two , seeing normal things to make it more exciting.
To be honest , it could make a beautiful design of bracelets :-)
Thanks for sharing and inspiration.
