Sony Center Reflections

The multifunctional Sony Center at the Potzdammerplatz in Berlin was completed in 2000 after almost 5 years of construction.

It is a design by the internationally renowned American architect Helmut Jahn (born in Germany)

The Center's buildings enclosed a by huge steel, glass and teflon coated cloth roof construction that dominates the oval forum. This is a public square and therefore not closed off from the surrounding streets.

The roof construction is particularly daring. A fan-shaped tent roof of tarpaulin is attached to a steel ring with anchors, which is attached to the surrounding buildings.

Today not the panorama function of my camera but a multitude of reflective glass faade panels that ensure fascinating abstract whimsical, graphic compositions.

The first photo shows the wild deformations of the roof structure with its creme-white sails in one of the facades of the Center.

The second photo shows a double portrait of the roof construction as it emerges as you enter the roofed square from the Potzdammer Platz.

The third photo shows an unpredictional reflection of the steel ring structure that connects the dome to the underlying buildings.
